Jonathan Little Wins Epic Heads Up Match

At only 23 years old, Jonathan Little has won his second World Poker Tour Title. Little had to fight his way through 412 players, one of the tougher final tables in recent memory, and outlast a heads-up specialist in a marathon one on one match. All the effort was worth it, as he now takes home the title of World Poker Finals Champion and a first place prize of over $1.1 million dollars.

Mike “The Mouth” Matusow was the first player eliminated in today’s action. He came in short stacked, and although was able to double up early with Ace-Jack, the same hand sealed his 6th place finish when he was eliminated by the pair of nines held by Jonathan Little. Matusow was quickly joined by Jack Schanbacher in 5th place, David “The Dragon” Pham in 4th place and the lone amateur, Charles Marchese in 3rd.

It could then be argued that the real final table began.

It took 105 hands to get to heads-up action where blinds were 40,000-80,000. There were over 150 big blinds in play and both Jaffe and Little have plenty of experience with shorthanded play. At the 2008 NBC Heads-Up Championship, Jonathan Little defeated Erik Seidel, Gabe Kaplan and Greg Raymer to make it to the quarterfinals of the event. Then this summer Jonathan Jaffe finished 4th at the WSOP heads-up event. 256 players participated there and Jaffe outlasted all but Kenny Tran, Alec “Traheho” Torelli and Vanessa Selbst. The mixture of deep stacks and two talented heads-up players lead to an epic battle.

Nine separate lead changes were seen as Little and Jaffe battled it out for 170 hands. In the end it would be Little who would emerge victorious in his fourth televised final table when his AJ held up over the A10 of Jaffe. Already with $4,000,000 in live tournament earnings, Little has proved again that he is one of the best young players on the circuit today.
