WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star, Day 1A Recap

Level 10: 500-1,000, 100 ante

By BJ Nemeth

0770 Day 1a Shooting Stars
In the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star tournament, every table is guaranteed to have at least one notable player who has been named as a "Shooting Star." Any player who eliminates a Shooting Star will receive a $5,000 bounty, along with an autographed bounty t-shirt.

The Shooting Stars for Day 1A are (front row, left to right): Mike Matusow, Gavin Smith, Kathy Liebert, Will Failla, Sam Stein, Jonathan Duhamel, Liv Boeree, Maria Ho, Joe Hachem, Daniel Negreanu, (back row, left to right): Christian Harder, Joe Tehan, Erik Seidel, Andy Frankenberger, Vanessa Selbst, Phil Hellmuth, Dwyte Pilgrim, Faraz Jaka, and Tournament Director Matt Savage.

2012 Shooting Star T-Shirts
Every player who eliminates a Shooting Star receives a customized bounty t-shirt with that Shooting Star's picture on it. It's tradition for the Shooting Star to sign the t-shirt after their elimination.

0300 Shuffle Up and Deal
WPT Commentator Vince Van Patten (center) prepares to do the "Shuffle Up and Deal," flanked by WPT Anchor Marianela Pereyra (filling in for a pregnant-and-due-any-day-now Kimberly Lansing), WPT Raw Deal Host Tony Dunst, and Royal Flush Girls Ivy Teves, Tugba Ercan, Angelique Velez, and Jeannie Duffy.

0566 Mike Matusow Doubles Up
Shooting Star Mike Matusow (left) pumps his fist in the air after doubling up with JdiamondJspade against his opponent's 10heart10spade.

0443a Selbst Folds Top Full House
On a board of Jspade9spade8spadeQheartQspade, Shooting Star Vanessa Selbst folded the QdiamondJheart -- top full house. Why would she do that? Fellow Shooting Star Daniel Negreanu thinks she made the right play, because before she showed her cards, Negreanu said (out of earshot), "If I've ever been more sure of something, it is that she has four queens and he has a straight flush."

Selbst's opponent never showed his cards, but he took the pot.

0623 Erik Seidel and Phil Hellmuth
Shooting Star Phil Hellmuth (standing, right) arrived late, as he traditionally does, and chatted with fellow Shooting Star Erik Seidel (standing, center) before he took his seat.

0746 Daniel Negreanu and Ivy Teves
During one of the breaks, Royal Flush Girl Ivy Teves interviews Shooting Star Daniel Negreanu.

1001 Dwyte Pilgrim Eliminated by Dung Nguyen
Shooting Star Dwyte Pilgrim (right) flopped a set of fours against the set of kings of Dzung Nguyen (left), and they got it all in on the river when both players made full houses. That's how Pilgrim became the first Shooting Star to be eliminated.

1026 Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu
Shooting Star Phil Hellmuth (second from left) explains how he doubled up with pocket aces to fellow Shooting Star Daniel Negreanu (center, standing).

0822 Matt Savage and Jessica Welman
Tournament Director Matt Savage reverses roles with WPT reporter Jessica Welman, and interviews her during one of the breaks.

1219 Will Failla Doubles Up
After doubling up his short stack, Shooting Star Will Failla (left) asks the crowd why they didn't applaud for him. Perhaps it wasn't dramatic enough for the crowd, because Failla was all in after the flop with top pair and the nut flush draw against a lower flush draw.

1279 Joe Hachem Triples Up
Shooting Star Joe Hachem (right) smiles as he wins with a flush to triple up against fellow Shooting Star Christian Harder (left) and Randal Flowers (not pictured).

1615 Shannon Shorr Eliminates Andy Frankenberger
Shannon Shorr (pictured) eliminated two short stacks in one hand, including Shooting Star Andy Frankenberger. Shorr took the pot with 7spade5heart, all in preflop against Frankenberger's 9diamond9spade and the other player's AclubKspade -- Shorr flopped trip fives.

This pot moved Shorr into the chip lead, and he would continue to contend for the top of the leaderboard for the rest of the day.

1659 Phil Hellmuth Eliminated by Mark Vivletti
Shooting Star Phil Hellmuth (center) signs the bounty t-shirt after he was eliminated by Mark Violetti (right). Hellmuth was short-stacked and all in preflop with AheartJdiamond, and never improved against Violetti's AdiamondKdiamond.

1718 Maria Ho Eliminated by Jonathan Little
Shooting Star Daniel Negreanu (standing, left) sweats the board as fellow Shooting Star Maria Ho (left) was all in against Jonathan Little (center). Ho was ahead preflop with 10heart10spade to Little's Jspade10club, but a jack on the flop ended her day.

1774 Maria Ho Eliminated by Jonathan Little
After eliminating Maria Ho, Jonathan Little received $5,000, an autographed Shooting Star bounty t-shirt, and a hug.

1813 Daniel Negreanu Eliminated by Leland Neal
After a flop of Qdiamond9club7diamond, Shooting Star Daniel Negreanu (right) was all in with AclubQclub (top pair) against the 7club7heart (set of sevens) of Leland Neal (center). Negreanu never improved, and he was eliminated.

1882 Paul McCaffrey and Liv Boeree
Shooting Star Liv Boeree (right) poses with the player who eliminated her, Paul McCaffrey. Boeree went out on a bad beat, all in preflop with QclubQdiamond against McCaffrey's 6club6diamond -- McCaffrey flopped a set of sixes.

1814 Will Failla Bounty T-Shirt
Shooting Star Will Failla poses with the t-shirt he autographed for Neil Blumenfield. Failla wrote, "U OWN MY FAT ASS! The Thrill!"

1960 Joe Tehan and John Davies
ClubWPT.com qualifier John Davies (right) had a successful start to the tournament, surviving to Day 2 and picking up a $5,000 bounty along the way by eliminating Shooting Star Joe Tehan (left).

2106 Vanessa Selbst Doubles Thru Mark Vivletti
In the last level of the day, Mark Violetti (foreground, right) tried to become the first player to collect two bounties. He eliminated Phil Hellmuth earlier, and then had Vanessa Selbst (center) all in preflop. But Selbst had aces to Violetti's pocket kings, and the best hand won to give Selbst the double up.

Selbst finished the day with 125,400, the highest chip count among the surviving Shooting Stars.

2177 Erik Seidel Eliminated by Bryce Yockey
Shooting Star Erik Seidel (right) was all in preflop with Adiamond9spade, but failed to improve against the 7club7heart of Bryce Yockey (center). Yockey collected the bounty on Seidel, and moved closer to the top of the the leaderboard in the final half hour of the day.

2305 Faraz Jaka Eliminated by Brandon Wong
In the final minutes of the day, Shooting Star Faraz Jaka (left) was eliminated by Brandon Wong. Jaka seems somewhat resentful.

2329 Chipleader Bryce Yockey and Matt Savage
At the end of the day, Tournament Director Matt Savage (right) verifies the counts of the chipleaders before awarding the $10,000 end-of-day-chipleader bonus.

After confirming the count, Savage announces to the crowd that the chipleader is Bryce Yockey (left), with 245,300. After eliminating Seidel, Yockey won a big pot with quad sixes to become the only player to cross the 200,000 mark.

Day 1A came to an end after ten levels with about 54 players remaining from a starting field of 142. Here is an unofficial look at the top of the leaderboard:

1.  Bryce Yockey  -  245,300
2.  Brandon Wong  -  195,600
3.  Amir Khaziri  -  187,700
4.  Shannon Shorr  -  183,400
5.  David Peters  -  142,100

Day 1B begins Tuesday at 10:45 am PT, when a fresh batch of players will try to collect bounties on a fresh batch of Shooting Stars. Return to WPT.com for continuing live coverage throughout the day.

Day 1A Ends with 54 Players and a $10,000 Payday for Bryce Yockey

When the last level of Day 1A action got underway, it seemed like the race for the chip lead was a two horse between Shannon Shorr and Brandon Wong.

However, it turns out several other players wanted to make a run at the $10,000 payday for ending as chip leader and we saw the top count change several times in the final minutes of play.  Amir Khaziri and Neil Blumenfield each took a turn atop the counts, but it was Bryce Yockey who ended the day with the big stack.

Yockey won a gigantic pot when he made quads against another player's full house and he surged past the 200,000-chip mark. Yockey ended the day with 50,000 more chips than his next closest competitor, Wong, who bagged up 195,600.

Yockey is already up $15,000 in this event thanks to the chip leader bonus and a Shooting Star bounty.  Yockey busted Poker Hall of Famer Erik Seidel late in the day to add to his growing stack.

There were 13 players who eached picked up a $5,000 bounty today, but no one has picked up multiple counts yet.  There are also five bounties remaining in the field.  Shooting Star Vanessa Selbst finished strongest amongst the bounties with 124,500, but Shooting Stars Christian Harder and Jonathan Duhamel also ended in six-figure territory. Mike Matusow is just above average with 83,800, and Kathy Liebert is the shortest stacked Shooting Star who still has a more than workable 61,500.

The 142 players who started Day 1A are down to approximately 54, but a whole new crop of players, including 28 more Shooting Star bounties, will be back in action at 10:45am tomorrow for Day 1B.

Here are the top five unofficial chip counts from Day 1A:

1. Bryce Yockey - 245,300
2. Brandon Wong - 195,600
3. Amir Khaziri - 187,700
4. Shannon Shorr - 183,400
5. David Peters - 142,100

In the final minutes, a player is all in preflop with KdiamondKspade against Jonathan Little's AclubKheart

The board comes 8diamond5diamond3spadeAheart4heart, and Little pairs his ace on the turn to win the pot and eliminate the other player.

Shooting Star Faraz Jaka is all in before the flop with JheartJdiamond against Brandon Wong's KspadeKdiamond.

The board is 7spade4diamond4club5diamond6club, offering no help to Faraza Jaka who is eliminated on the very last hand of the night. Wong collects his $5,000 bounty and rakes the pot.

Bryce Yockey Eliminates Paul McCaffrey, Takes Chiplead

Level 10: 500-1,000, 100 ante

On a board of 10heart10club6heart6clubKheart, Bryce Jockey bets 7,425 on the river, Paul McCaffrey raises to 17,425, Yockey shoves and McCaffrey calls all in.

Yockey quickly shows 6spade6diamond for a flopped full house and quads on the turn. Yockey eliminates one of the early chipleaders as he secures the late-night lead himself with about 240,000 just minutes before play ends for the day.

Shooting Star Sam Stein Eliminated by Shooting Star Kathy Liebert

Level 10: 500-1,000, 100 ante

2208 Sam Stein Eliminated by Kathy Liebert
Photo: Shooting Star Sam Stein (right) watches the river card fall as he is eliminated by fellow Shooting Star Kathy Liebert (left).

It is an instance of Shooting Star on Shooting Star violence as Shooting Star Sam Stein gets it all-in preflop for his last 15,200 holding JdiamondJclub to Shooting Star Kathy Liebert's 7diamond7spade.

Stein looks to be in good shape to double up until the 9heart7club2heart flop gives Liebert a set of sevens and the advantage in the hand.  The 2diamond on the turn improves Liebert to a full house and, with the Aspade on the river, Stein is eliminated.

There are now six Shooting Star bounties remaining in the field.  In addition to Liebert, Mike Matusow, Jonathan Duhamel, Christian Harder, Faraz Jaka, and Vanessa Selbst all look like they should make it through the final 12 minutes of action and on to Day 2.
