WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown, Day 2 Recap

Level 10: 500-1,000, 100 ante

By BJ Nemeth

0916 John Dolan
Former WSOP November Niner John Dolan (pictured) began Day 2 second in chips behind David Nicholson, but Nicholson faded and busted. Meanwhile, Dolan continued his momentum from Day 1 to stay near the top of the leaderboard, finishing fourth in chips with 224,300.

0941 ClubWPT Don Gehrling
There were two ClubWPT qualifiers who earned entry into this event via freerolls on ClubWPT.com, and both have survived the first two days. Don Gehrling (pictured) finished Day 2 with 57,000 in chips, while Butch Valure has 53,200.

0304 Under-21 Guitar Basket
Since Florida's gaming regulations allow anyone over the age of 18 to enter the tournament, the Seminole Hard Rock Casino offered their traditional bonus prize to the 18-20 year old who goes deepest in their WPT event. The prize? This basket filled with swag and gifts, highlighted by an electric guitar.

0648 Alexander Condon
There were three 18-20 year olds in this event -- Christopher Barnes, Alexander Condon, and George Sinishtaj. Barnes busted late on Day 1, and Sinishtaj busted early on Day 2 -- leaving Condon (pictured above) to claim the prize as the last under-21 year old standing.

7162 Alexander Condon Wins Guitar
Alexander Condon, who just became the last 18-20 year old standing in this tournament, earned the same distinction here last year.

As you can see, he had a different look in this photo from last year, with his hair grown out and without the sunglasses. One of the players at his table joked that he's acquiring enough electric guitars to start a band.

0664 RFGs and Vince Van Patten
On the afternoon of Day 2, the Royal Flush Girls hosted a 3-game beach volleyball tournament for players (the ones no longer in the tournament) and fans at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino pool.

Royal Flush Girls Jeannie Duffy, Danielle Ruiz, Tugba Ercan, and Angelique Velez pose for some promo shots with WPT Commentator Vince Van Patten before the tournament.

0684 RFG Danielle Ruiz
The WPT cameras were on hand to record the action for a segment on the TV show.

0719 RFG Danielle Ruiz and Marianela Ruiz
Royal Flush Girl Danielle Ruiz was a bit of a ringer, showing off some serious volleyball skills on the court.

0681 Volleyball
The yellow team (far side) split the first two games against the purple team (near side), forcing a third and final match.

0818 Vince Van Patten Winning Team
Royal Flush Girls Jeannie Duffy (second from left) and Angelique Velez (far right) anchored the purple team, along with Vince Van Patten (center) and Tony Dunst (second from right). After winning the decisive final match, the purple team won the WPT Beach Volleyball Tournament.

0959 Ebony Kenney
Ebony Kenney is one of the WPT's Ones to Watch for Season X, and she's also a local to the Seminole Hard Rock Casino. Kenney finished Day 2 well above average with 104,300.

0986 Will Failla Eliminated by Raj Vohra
Will Failla (pictured) is the current points leader in the WPT Player of the Year race, but he won't be adding any points to his total this tournament. In the last level of the day, Failla moved all in for about 20 big blinds over a raise from Raj Vohra (foreground, right). The two players joked with each other as Vohra contemplated his decision, and he eventually called with A-J. Failla turned over KdiamondKspade.

Even if they hadn't been all in before the flop, it was inevitable they would be after a flop of KheartQheart10diamond gave Failla top set to Vohra's flopped straight. Failla needed the board to pair to stay alive, but the turn was the 6spade and the river was the 9spade -- Vohra won the pot, and Failla was eliminated.

0874 Chipleader Clyde Hinton
When Day 2 came to an end, the chipleader was Clyde Hinton (pictured) with 262,900.

0947 Tommy Vedes
Tommy Vedes (pictured) pulled in the biggest pot of the tournament late in the day when he turned a set of kings against Byron Kaverman's flopped set of jacks. They got it all in on the turn, and Vedes doubled up into the chip lead.

Vedes ultimately finished the day second in chips with 235,300, but his performance on Day 2 -- combined with the fact that he made this same WPT Final Table last year -- earned him the distinction of ClubWPT Player of the Day. Click here to see his interview with Jessica Welman.

Day 2 came to an end after five more levels with 102 players remaining, and an average chip count around 85,000. Here's a look at the top 10 heading into Day 3:

1.  Clyde Hinton  -  262,900

Ebony Kenney vs. Ravi Raghavan

Level 10: 500-1,000, 100 ante

0959 Ebony Kenney
Ravi Raghavan opens under the gun, another player calls in late position, and Ebony Kenney (pictured above) reraises out of the small blind. Raghavan fires back, making it 22,300 total to play. The third player in the hand folds and Kenney calls after some deliberation.

The flop comes Kdiamond8spade2heart and both players check. The turn is the 4diamond and Kenney bets 18,000. Raghavan calls.  The river is the 3club and both players check again.

"Pair," Kenney announces without turning over her hand. Raghavan also has a pair, Kspade9spade for top pair. Kenney gives her cards a hard toss into the muck and Raghavan takes the pot.

Ebony Kenney  -  105,000
Ravi Raghavan  -  188,000

Will Failla Eliminated By Raj Vohra

Level 10: 500-1,000, 100 ante

0986 Will Failla Eliminated by Raj Vohra
Photo: Will Failla (center) stares down Raj Vohra (foreground, right) while Vohra considers whether or not to call Failla's all in.

Raj Vohra opens to 2,300 from middle position and WPT Champions Club member Will Failla moves all-in from the small blind for 20,500.

Vohra and Failla banter back and forth for a couple of minutes with the two laughing at each other's jokes about winning the hand.  Vohra eyes his own stack to see what kind of dent it would put in his stack.

"You lose you have a Happy Meal left," Failla tells him.  Vohra says something that amounts to him being so bad and calls for around half his stack.

"I have a pair," Failla tells him.

"I don't," Vohra responds.

Failla asks, "Do you have an ace?" Vohra nods, then Failla reveals his hand: KdiamondKspade.

"A pair?!" Vohra asks incredulously.

Failla asks, "You wanna run it twice?"

"Only  the river," Vohra says. "I always hit on the river." Vohra then turns over his hand, A-J.

The players, including Failla, see the Kheart on the flop and assume he is in great shape, but it is followed by the Qheart and 10diamond, giving Vohra a Broadway straight. The table gasps and Failla eases their concern saying, "The ten of clubs is coming on the river."

The turn is the 6spade and the river 9spade is no help to Failla either, so he is eliminated late in the action here on Day 2.

"I am so bad," Vohra tells the table.

Raj Vohra - 68,000
Will Failla - eliminated

Fred Goldberg Busts a Player

Level 10: 500-1,000, 100 ante

A short-stacked player moves all in preflop, Abbey Daniels reraises, and then Fred Goldberg reraises again. Daniels folds.

The short stack shows 10club10diamond, and he'll need it to hold to stay alive against Goldberg's AheartQheart.

The board comes Qdiamond4club3heart9heart8club, and Goldberg pairs his queen to win the pot and eliminate the other player.

The player in seat 2 raises before the flop, Tommy Vedes three-bets, Byron Kaverman four-bets, Seat 2 folds and Vedes calls.

The flop is J-X-X with two clubs, Vedes checks, Kaverman bets 14,600 and Vedes tanks for a minute before calling.

The turn is the Kclub, putting three clubs on board, Vedes checks, Kaverman bets 45,000, Vedes raises moves all in for about 85,000 and Kaverman calls.

Kaverman turns over a pair of jacks for top set on the flop and Vedes shows a pair of kings for top set on the turn. The river is a blank and Vedes doubles up to take the chip lead.

Tommy Vedes - 230,000
Byron Kaverman - 10,000

Will Failla Doubles Up

Level 10: 500-1,000, 100 ante

Will Failla is short-stacked and moves all in from middle position, and the big blind calls with J-J. Failla turns over A-K, and he'll need to improve to stay alive.

The board comes Q-10-x-x-J, and Failla rivers an ace-high straight in dramatic fashion to double up in chips.
