Arnaud Mattern Eliminated by Gavin Smith
Level 8: 500-1,000, 100 ante
A player in middle position opens for a raise, Nancy Todd Tyner calls from the cutoff, Gavin Smith calls out of the small blind, and Arnaud Mattern calls out of the big blind.
The flop comes down T
4
2
and Smith checks. Mattern bets 8,000 and the initial raiser calls. Tyner folds and Smith check-raises to 37,000 total.
Mattern moves all-in for around 50,000, prompting a fold from the initial raiser and a call from Smith. Mattern shows A
T
for top pair and the nut flush draw and Smith shows K
J
for a smaller flush draw.
The turn brings the 7
and the K
on the river gives Smith the bigger pair and knocks Mattern out of the tournament.
After the hand, Smith's tablemates are giving him a hard time about bad beating Mattern out of the event.
Smith defends himself, saying, "It's hard to imagine I'm in that bad of shape."
Smith also notices a pattern in his Tweeting today, which he shares with the table:
"Earlier today I Tweeted that I bad beat Matt Stout to double up. At the end of the last level I Tweeted that I bad beat Scott Seiver to get to 137,000. Now I can say I bad beat Arnaud Mattern too."
The table laughs and someone suggests Smith might feel bad about busting players out in such brutal fashion.
"He's Stars, I don't care," Smith jokes. "Right, Steve?" Smith then turns to tablemate and fellow Full Tilt Pro Steve Zolotow.
"That's right," Zolotow responds with a smile. "They are the enemy, aren't they? We have to destroy them."
