Notes
Level 6: 50,000-100,000, ante
- If I were asked to pick the last three teams, I would have put my money on the Brunsons, 'Greensteins' and Shulmans. It's come to fruition and its becoming obvious they're all taking things a little more seriously now.
- Barry Shulman just smiled. I think it hurt.
- The Shulmans, who experts owuld agree are the weakest of the three teams, are employing an aggressive all-in strategy, cutting down the oppositions' chances of outplaying them after the cards hit the table. It's a smart tactic to be using right now, and one that suggests they've been able to put ego aside for the good of their chances here.

Two is Enough
Level 6: 50,000-100,000, ante
With Vince Van Patten spending most of his WPT time in the commentary booth, I haven’t had much opportunity to get to know the man who, along with mike Sexton, has been the face of the WPT. With his early exit today, he had a little more time than usual, and getting him alone with father Dick meant I’d get him in his most natural state.
I sat down with the two and we started talking about their beginnings in the game. Dick did the WSOP for three years, admitting “It was very hard without seeing the cards.? He got the gig because he’d played host to some of the biggest home games in Los Angeles, star-studded affairs that let he and his Hollywood cronies get away from the press and the fans for a while.
For Vince, the clinking chips, slamming glasses, yells and laughter had him hooked. Poker night was the ultimate in terms of showing the world you were a man, so he chomped at the bit before he reached ten years of age. By fourteen, he was sitting in the game with the grown-ups.
“One night, he was ahead and asked if he could quit because he had to get up for school in the morning. I told him ‘Shut up and deal’? Dick told me as they both laughed. By sixteen, Vince was playing in casinos, wearing a fake beard and moustache. After his starring roll in Rock ‘n Roll High School, he was legal to play, and his celebrity never hurt with intimidating the table.
“I’ve always won at poker,? said VVP, who hosted Hollywood’s home games for over fifteen years. It was that, not his connection to his father, which got him his first poker commentary job on WSOP. After that, when the WPT formed, he was the natural choice for the job, combining poker experience with Hollywood savvy.
As the conversation was winding down, Dick told me he felt like you could tell a lot about a person by how they handle themselves at the poker table. ‘Poker is more than a game of math or psychology; it’s a game of life.’ Its not the wins or losses so much as how the man handles the wins and losses that speaks to character, and his maintaining his dignity along with Vince doing the same showed me the caliber of people we’re talking about. I felt like I knew them a little before only in having seen them on TV. I know them a little better now and I can say with some certainty they play poker with class and with dignity.
