No Student Loan Debt for WPT Champ Matt Juttelstad

Level 29: 40,000-80,000, 10,000 ante

4877 Matt Juttelstad w RFGs Jeannie Duffy n Brittney Bell
Matt Juttelstad may still have to sweat the result of his grad school admissions interview, but he certainly won't have to sweat how to pay for grad school.

The Florida native came back from a nearly year-long hiatus from poker to play in the Seminole Hard Rock Lucky Hearts Poker Open only because he was going to be in the Miami area for his interview at Florida Atlantic University.  He even busted on Day 1A and only re-entered on Day 1B after his interview ended earlier than expected. That decision was a profitable one for Juttelstad. He is now a WPT title holder and has $268,444.

When the Lucky Hearts final table began, it was Gigi Gagne who was in pole postion with a big chip lead over the field and a chance to become the first female winner of a WPT open event.  She took a hit to her stack early though when she flopped two pair holding Aclub4heart on an Aheart5heart4spade board and got it all-in against Ferrera's Aspade10heart.  Ferrera spiked a ten on the turn to make a better two pair and double, then put another dent in Gagne's stack a few hands later.

Though it was Ferrera who got off to the fastest start at the final table, he was the player who exited first when he aggressively four-bet all-in preflop with Q-J and Juttelstad called with 9club9spade.  Ferrera flopped a jack and looked in good shape to double, but the river brought the 9heart to give Juttelstad a set and the pot, sending Ferrera home in sixth place.

Then it was Juttelstad's turn to hold the chip lead, but he had to weather a storm of rough hands, including short stack Todd Jacobson doubling thru him on two separate occassions.  Jacobson came in as the smallest stack, but refused to give up and lasted through 192 hands of action before busting in fifth place when his pocket tens couldn't hold against Sharon Levin's [Abut asd4d] after the two got it all-in preflop.

Busting Jacobson added some chips to Levin's dwindling stack, but with both Juttelstad and Uri Kadosh sitting on big stacks, it was tough for Levin to keep up with the pack.  Levin tried to pick up some chips by shoving all-in from the button with Aclub3spade, but Gagne woke up with a bigger ace, Aspade10club, in the big blind.  Her hand held and Levin exited in fourth place.

When three-handed play began, the trio of players were closely packed together in the counts, but then Juttelstad took command of the table and started amassing quite a pile of chips.  Juttelstad doubled thru Kadosh to take the chip lead, then picked off even more of Kadosh's stack.  Juttelstad dealt the final blow to Kadosh when Kadosh reraised all-in preflop holding Jclub8diamond and Juttelstad called him with a dominant AheartJspade.

Juttelstad's hand held to eliminate Kadosh in third place and give him a more than 3-1 advantage over Gagne going into heads-up play.  Juttelstad may have had the chip advantage, but Gagne proved she could play with patience and wouldn't go down without a fight.

Over the course of roughly 30 hands of heads-up action, the two sparred in relatively small pots before the match abruptly screeched to a halt.  On the final hand of play, the two limped in preflop and a saw the board fall 5club3spade2heart.  Gagne bet and Juttelstad called.  The turn brought the Aspade and Gagne, who had made the wheel with 4-8, moved all-in.  Juttelstad called immediately and showed 4club6heart for a bigger straight, leaving Gagne drawing dead to a chop.

The river 8spade ended Gagne's hopes of becoming the first female open event winner and, in a flash, the frenetically paced final table, which plowed through 303 hands of action in less than nine hours, was over.

After the hand concluded and WPT's own Mike Sexton interviewed Juttelstad about his victory, Juttelstad said he needed to "decompress."  That is certainly expected when you consider that in for the past four days Juttelstad played some impressive poker, staying near the top of the chip counts from Day 1 all the way to Day 4 en route to a WPT title, a seat in the WPT World Championship, and a quarter of a million dollars.

Juttelstad deserves some time to relax...until he has to start worrying about how that grad school interview went.

Level 22: 8,000-16,000, 2,000 ante

Ferrera thinks for a bit before he moves all in for 859,000. Gagne asks for an exact count and thinks for a minute before she calls with Aclub4heart (two pair). Ferrera shows Aspade10heart (pair of aces), and he'll need to improve to stay alive.

The turn card is -- the 10spade.

WPT Seminole Hard Rock Lucky Hearts Poker Open, Day 3 Recap

Level 21: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

By BJ Nemeth

4372 Ivan Schertzer w RFGs Brittany Bell Jeannie Duffy
Ivan Schertzer was down to his final three big blinds with 25 players left, and hoped a photo with Royal Flush Girls Brittany Bell (left) and Jeannie Duffy would give him some luck. Unfortunately, it didn't work, and he was eliminated soon after. At least he survived through the money bubble, earning $8,629.

4501 Bernard Lubitz Justin Zaki Todd Jacobson
Justin Zaki (center), who final tabled last season's WPT event here at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, found himself in a tough spot with 22 players left. Bernard Lubitz (left) raised, Zaki called, and Todd Jacobson (right) moved all in. Lubitz called all in, and Zaki faced a decision for all his chips.

Zaki eventually folded, claiming to have "two black jacks." Lubitz turned over QclubQheart, and Jacobson showed AdiamondKspade. The board came AclubJdiamond10heart10spade10diamond, and Jacobson paired his ace on the flop to win with a full house, eliminating Lubitz in 22nd place.

Even though other players assured Zaki he made the correct play by folding, if he had called, he would have won the pot and more than doubled up. Unfortunately, Zaki was eliminated a few minutes later in 21st place.

4539 Todd Jacobson Doubles Thru Keith Ferrera
With 13 players remaining, Keith Ferrera (far left) three-bet all in after a flop of Qclub10club9heart against Todd Jacobson (far right). Ferrera had the lead with 10diamond10heart (middle set), while Jacobson had QspadeJdiamond for top pair with an open-ended straight draw.

The turn was the Aspade, and both players watch as the dealer puts out the 8diamond on the river -- giving Jacobson a queen-high straight to win the pot and double up in chips.

4577 Alex Ivanov Eliminated by Gigi Gagne
With 11 players remaining, Alex Ivanov (far left) raised, Gigi Gagne (center left) reraised, and Keith Ferrera (foreground right) four-bet it to 200,000. Ivanov moved all in for nearly 400,000, and Gagne tanked for a while before she called. Ferrera took a minute before he called behind -- 60 big blinds in the pot before the flop.

The flop came Qclub9spade3spade, Ferrera checked, Gagne moved all in, and Ferrera folded. Ivanov showed JclubJspade, but Gagne turned over KclubQspade for a pair of queens. (She's pointing to her queen in the photo.)

The turn was the 5spade, the river was the 6diamond, and Gigi Gagne won a huge pot to take a massive chip lead into the final 10-handed table.

4592 Gigi Gagne
Gigi Gagne smiles and poses with her massive pile of chips before moving to the final 10-handed table. With nearly 2.6 million in chips, she had 80 big blinds more than anyone else.

4621 Final 10 Players
The final 10 players, in seat order: (1) Matt Juttelstad, (2) Victor Heffesse, (3) Gigi Gagne, (4) Uri Kadosh (away from his seat), (5) Keith Ferrera, (6) Sharon Levin, (7) Omar Sider, (8) Todd Jacobson, (9) Hal Klein, and (10) Harrison Gimbel.

4730 Matt Juttelstad
While Matt Juttelstad didn't go wire-to-wire as chipleader, he was never very far from the top of the leaderboard after winning a big pot late on Day 1B. Juttelstad was the overall chipleader heading into Day 2, Day 3, and is second in chips going to the final table.

Juttelstad stopped playing poker after Black Friday hit on April 15, 2011, and this is his first major event since. You wouldn't know he was out of practice by the poise and the polish that he's shown this week.

4605 Harrison Gimbel Doubles Thru Victor Heffesse
With 10 players left, Harrison Gimbel (left) doubled thru Victor Heffesse (far right). All in preflop, Gimbel's 10club10diamond flopped an unnecessary set against Heffesse's 9diamond9heart on a board of 10heart6spade2spade8clubKclub.

4642 Victor Heffesse Out in 10th
One hand after doubling up Harrison Gimbel, Victor Heffesse (seated, top left), got it all in preflop with 7club7spade against the QclubQheart of Sharon Levin (second from right). The board came 10spade6diamond2heartQdiamond6club, and Levin won the pot with a set of queens to eliminate Heffesse in 10th place. Uri Kadosh (standing) offers a handshake of congradudolence to Heffesse.

4767 Gigi Gagne Moves All In vs Keith Ferrera
With seven players remaining and less than 150,000 in the pot on a board of KspadeQheart2diamond7spade, chipleader Gigi Gagne (left) moves all in, easily covering Keith Ferrera (right), even though he has more than a million in chips himself.

Gagne, who was still busy stacking chips from a previous pot, moved all in as if it had been an afterthought. Ferrera could only smile to himself as he folded.

4797 Omar Sider vs Sharon Levin
Short stack Omar Sider (standing, right) moved all in after a preflop raise from Sharon Levin (seated, center). Levin tanked for about a minute before he folded.

Five hands later, Sider got it all in preflop with JheartJspade against the AclubKheart of Matt Juttelstad. The board came Adiamond8diamond8heart6heart7diamond, and Juttelstad paired his ace on the flop to win the pot and eliminate Omar Sider in 7th place on the WPT Final Table bubble.

Hands #14-15: Hal Klein Eliminated in 8th Place ($23,969)

Level 20: 5,000-10,000, 1,000 ante

Hand #14  -  Uri Kadosh raises from middle position to 34,000, Keith Ferrera reraises from middle position to 65,000, and Matt Juttelstad cold four-bets from the big blind to 155,000.

Kadosh folds, and Ferrera moves all in. Juttelstad quickly folds, and Ferrera shows 7club5club as he collects the pot.

Hand #15  -  Keith Ferrera raises from early position to 25,000, Hal Klein moves all in from the button for 89,000, and Ferrera calls with Adiamond8diamond. Klein turns over KspadeJheart, and he'll need to improve to stay alive.

The board comes Aspade6heart2heart9spade7club, and Ferrera wins the pot with a pair of aces to eliminate Hal Klein in eighth place.

Keith Ferrera  -  1,085,000

Alex Ivanov Eliminated in 11th Place ($13,423)

Level 20: 5,000-10,000, 1,000 ante

Alex Ivanov raises to 25,000 from middle position and Gigi Gagne reraises to 50,000 behind him.  Keith Ferrera is in the small blind and four-bets to 200,000 total.

Ivanov quickly moves all-in for 393,000 total.  Gagne gets an exact count and thinks a minute before she says, "You know what? Let's do it. Rock and roll," and calls.

Ferrera is next to act and takes a minute before calling as well.  Ivanov is all-in for the main pot, but there is still action pending when the flop comes Qclub9spade3spade.  Ferrera checks and Gagne moves all-in.  Ferrera quickly folds.

Gagne turns over KclubQspade for top pair.  Ivanov holds JclubJspade.  The 5spade on the turn gives both players a flush draw, but Gagne has the bigger flush draw.  The river 6diamond is the end of the line for Ivanov and Gagne rakes in the gigantic pot to take a substantial chip lead going in to the unofficial final table.

Gigi Gagne - 2,550,000 (255 BBs)
Keith Ferrera - 715,000 (72 BBs)
Alex Ivanov - eliminated in 11th place ($13,423)

Todd Jacobson Doubles Thru Keith Ferrera

Level 20: 5,000-10,000, 1,000 ante

4539 Todd Jacobson Doubles Thru Keith Ferrera
Photo: Keith Ferrara (left) and Todd Jacobson (right) watch as the dealer puts an eight out on the river to give Jacobson a straight.

Keith Ferrera raises to 25,000 on the button and Todd Jacobson calls from the big blind.

The flop comes Qclub10club9heart and Jacobson checks.  Ferrera bets 25,000 and Jacobson check-raises to 81,000 total.  Ferrera asks Jacobson how much he has behind and Jacobson silently counts out his 233,000 remaining chips.

After some though, Ferrera grabs a stack of 25,000 chips and reraises enough to put Jacobson all-in.  Jacobson calls and lets out a sigh when Ferrera shows 10diamond10heart for middle set.

Jacobson does have several outs with QspadeJdiamond for top pair with an open-ended straight draw.  The Aspade on the turn is no help to Jacobson, but the 8diamond on the river makes his straight and gives him the pot.

Todd Jacobson - 690,000 (69 BBs)
Keith Ferrera - 1,200,000 (120 BBs)
