Taylor Von Kriegenbergh's Long and Winding Road to Victory

Level 33: 100,000-200,000, 25,000 ante

TaylorVonKriegenbergh4
When you come into a final table as the big chip leader, things can go a couple of ways. Sometimes, it is a steamroll straight through the competition and on to the title. Other times, the path to victory is a winding one, complete with ups, downs, surprises, and setbacks. Taylor Von Krienbergh’s final table story is one of the winding road type of stories. Or, more appropriately, a roller coaster ride. Von Kriegenbergh began the day at the top of the hill, looking to only climb higher as play unfolded. Instead, it was a long and crazy night of poker that took a lot of twists and turns, but ended just like it started—with Von Kriegenbergh on top.

The inaugural Seminole Hard Rock Showdown final table will be remembered for a lot of suckouts and short stacks surviving and it was Curt Kohlberg who kicked off that trend by doubling thru Tommy Vedes on just the 17th hand of play. Three hands later, it was Abbey Daniels’ turn to double when a cooler of a hand saw her set of sevens hold up against Von Kriegenbergh’s set of threes.

From there, there were plenty more double ups but no eliminations. The chip lead circled around the table as just about every player either doubled someone up or doubled up themselves. Someone had to go out at some point though and the first player to hit the rail was Tommy Vedes, whose hopes of picking up a second WPT title were cut short just two hands after he took the chip lead at the final table. Vedes lost most of his stack when he called Daniels’ river shove with a king-high straight only to run into her rivered flush. The very next hand he got it all-in with top pair and a flush draw to Curt Kohlberg’s two pair and bricked to go home in sixth.

Allen Bari was the next player to fall. Bari seemed pretty card dead all evening and his bad run of luck was capped off when his Adiamond10diamond couldn’t win a coinflip against Justin Zaki’s pocket fives. Daniels met her demise a few orbits later on the wrong end of a coinflip as well. Getting short on chips, Daniels moved in with Aspade8diamond and Kohlberg called her with pocket sixes. The board ran out seven-high and the man who began the day as the shortest stack took the chip lead, while Daniels exited in fourth place.

After Daniels left, the action stalled as the final three sparred in pots for nearly 70 hands without a major all-in confrontation. During that time, the blinds kept climbing and Von Kriegenbergh needed to pick up some chips in order to stay alive. He took a stand with Kdiamond10heart and ran smack into Zaki’s pocket aces, but a ten on the flop and a king on the turn gave new life to Von Kriegenbergh.

The young pro credited a sick run of luck and a little help from a higher power in his victory. That luck was out in full force from that point forward as he doubled thru Kohlberg to take a big chip lead, then finished off Zaki with 6club7club to Zaki’s AdiamondJspade. With the local grinder out, Von Kriegenbergh only needed to dispatch of one more opponent and victory was his.

Von Kriegenbergh came into heads up play with a more than 5-1 chip lead and Kohlberg was at quite a disadvantage with his less than ten big blind stack. Kohlberg sparred with the big stack for a few minutes, but it only took eight hands of heads-up play for Von Kriegenbergh to eliminate his fellow Bostonian and take the title.

On the final hand of play, Von Kriegenbergh got one last bit of luck as his Qclub8diamond made a full house to beat Kohlberg’s Aspade10club and bring the twelve-hour and 220-hand final table to a close. The Seminole Hard Rock had the presidential suite waiting for Von Kriegenbergh after play ended. However, after this long and winding final table, Von Kriegenbergh was much more inclined to get some much deserved rest rather than rock hard celebrating his $1,122,340 victory.

Here are the results from the Seminole Hard Rock Showdown final table:

1st: Taylor Von Kriegenbergh - $1,122,340

Photo Recap: Day 5 of WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown

Level 24: 12,000-24,000, 4,000 ante

By BJ Nemeth

Day 5 began with 18 players, and it took less than five hours to reach the final six for Monday's televised WPT final table. Check out this photographic look back at Day 5 of the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown:

6926 Player Chip Bags
While the WPT set was being constructed in the Seminole Hard Rock Live arena, the playdown day of the tournament moved to the poker room.

6981 Noah Schwartz Out in 18th
Noah Schwartz (standing, center right) shakes hands with Bruce Snell after being eliminated in 18th place by James Mackey (seated, fair right). Schwartz moved all in preflop with Adiamond9diamond but ran into Mackey's 10heart10spade and didn't improve.

7021 Ronny Beda Eliminated by Abbey Daniels
After a flop of Kheart4heart4diamond, Abbey Daniels (right, seat 1) moved all in, and Ronny Beda (top left) was conflicted for several minutes before he decided to call with KspadeJdiamond. But Daniels turned over AdiamondKdiamond, and went on to win the pot and eliminate Beda in 17th place.

7162 Alexander Condon Wins Guitar
Alexander Condon of Sioux City, Iowa didn't finish in the money, but he was the deepest finisher among all the 18-20 year olds who entered this event. For that, he received a prize basket from the Seminole Hard Rock Casino that included an electric guitar autographed by Aaron Lewis, lead singer for the band Staind. Condon is the cousin of poker pro William Reynolds, who made the most recent WPT final table at the Hollywood Poker Open in Indiana.

7195 Tommy Vedes Doubles Thru Blair Hinkle
After a preflop raise from Justin Zaki (far right) and a reraise from Blair Hinkle (foreground, left), Tommy Vedes (center) moved all in. Zaki folded, and Hinkle thought for a while, saying, "I really feel like you're light here." Hinkle called with Aclub9heart, but Vedes wasn't light -- he had JdiamondJspade. The pocket jacks held up and Vedes doubled in a huge pot.

7211 Derek Buonano Eliminated by Kazu Oshima
Derek Buonano (left) lost a preflop race with QclubQspade against the AspadeKdiamond of Kazu Oshima (right) to be eliminated in 12th place.

7240 Bruce Snell vs Justin Zaki
Bruce Snell (far left), who entered the tournament on Day 2 after winning a last-minute megasatellite, limped under the gun, and then watched as Tommy Vedes (center, right) raised and Justin Zaki (right) reraised. Snell four-bet all in, forcing a quick fold from Vedes. Zaki thought for a bit before he folded, calling it a nice move on the part of Snell.

7283 Taylor Von Kriegenbergh vs Mike Shklover
With the final board showing AheartKdiamond9clubAspadeJclub, Taylor Von Kriegenbergh (left) studies Mike Shklover before betting the river. Shklover would fold, forfeiting the pot to Von Kriegenbergh.

7298 Kazu Oshima Eliminated by Abbey Daniels
With the board showing 9club9diamond3diamond8spade on the turn, Kazu Oshima (foreground, left) raised all in with AheartAspade, and Abbey Daniels (foreground, right) called with Qclub9heart (trip nines). The trip nines held up to eliminate Oshima in 11th place, and the remaining 10 players combined to a single table.

7364 Seminole Hard Rock Trophy
With the trophy nearby, the players continued battling for the six seats at Monday's televised WPT final table.

7353 Bruce Snell Eliminated by Allen Bari
Bruce Snell (standing, left) shakes hands with Tommy Vedes after being eliminated in 10th place at the hands of Allen Bari (center, in black). Snell had moved all in from the small blind with AheartJheart, only to see Bari wake up in the big blind with KclubKheart.

7405 Allen Bari vs Justin Zaki
With eight players left, Allen Bari (left) raised from early position, Justin Zaki (foreground, right) reraised from the button, and Bari reraised back at him. But when Zaki five-bet all in a few moments later, Bari would quickly fold.

7419 Curt Kohlberg Doubles Thru Taylor Von Kriegenbergh
With eight players left, Curt Kohlberg (standing, left) moved all in preflop with Adiamond7club, but ran into the 10diamond10heart of Taylor Von Kriegenbergh (foreground, center). Kohlberg flopped two pair to stay alive and double up.

7432 Blair Hinkle Eliminated by Justin Zaki
Day 4 chipleader Blair Hinkle (right) moved all in from the big blind with 8club8spade, but ran into the AdiamondAheart of Justin Zaki (standing, left). The aces held up, and Hinkle was eliminated in eighth place, earning $91,450.

7488 Taylor Von Kriegenbergh Doubles Thru Abbey Daniels
With seven players left on the TV bubble and the board showing KdiamondQheart5heart2club, Taylor Von Kriegenbergh (left, in grey and red) moved all in with 5diamond5spade (set of fives), and Abbey Daniels (foreground, right) called with AheartKheart (top pair, nut flush draw). Daniels would need to make her flush to win the pot and eliminate Von Kriegenbergh.

7496 Taylor Von Kriegenbergh Doubles Thru Abbey Daniels
Abbey Daniels (foreground, right) celebrates prematurely when she sees the river card fills her flush with the 2heart. But why is Taylor Von Kriegenbergh (left) smiling? Because the deuce paired the board, which turns his set of fives into a full house.

7500 Taylor Von Kriegenbergh Doubles Thru Abbey Daniels
It takes a moment, but Abbey Daniels (foreground, right) realizes her mistake, and reacts to losing the biggest pot of the tournament to Taylor Von Kriegenbergh (left, in grey and red). Von Kriegenbergh doubled up into the chip lead.

7735 Abbey Daniels vs Tommy Vedes
Abbey Daniels (left) didn't let the loss affect her, and played a big pot with Tommy Vedes (right) two hands later on a board of 10spade9heart6clubKspade10heart. Daniels would win this 1.5 million pot in a showdown with Jclub10diamond.

7827 James Mackey Bubbled in 7th
James Mackey was the unfortunate TV bubble boy, all in preflop with 5diamond5heart against the 8diamond8heart of Taylor Von Kriegenbergh. Mackey never improved, and the pot propelled Von Kriegenbergh to nearly double the stack of anyone else in the final six.

7848 Curt Kohlberg Will Not Raise with A-7
As the players fill out their WPT bio sheets, short stack Curt Kohlberg (right) assures the other final tablists that he will not be moving all in preflop with A-7 at the TV final table. Kohlberg goes on to say that he won't be raising with anything less than A-K, so everyone should just fold whenever he enters a pot.

7690 Allen Bari
Allen Bari, who was short-stacked on the money bubble but survived to the final six, was the RISE Player of the Day. Bari is fourth in chips, but fairly close to Justin Zaki (second in chips) and Abbey Daniels (third in chips).

Here are the official chip counts and seating positions for the televised WPT final table:

Seat 1. Abbey Daniels - 2,192,000 (91 BBs)
Seat 2. Tommy Vedes - 1,570,000 (65 BBs)

With James Mackey's elimination in seventh place, Day 5 is over in just five hours and the televised final table is set.  Taylor Von Kriegenbergh will be taking a huge chip lead into tomorrow, ending the day with 4,384,000.  That is double that of his next closest competitor.

Joing Von Kriegenbergh at the final table are two players with past WPT final table experience, title holder Tommy Vedes and Curt Kohlberg, who is making his third final table appearance.  Unfortunately for these two, they are the short stacks at the table with 1,570,000 and 655,000 respectively.

Rounding out the final table is longtime grinder Allen Bari, who is making his WPT final table debut, and two Floridians representing the locals, Abbey Daniels and Justin Zaki.
