Gavin Smith Leads the Field After Day 2

Level 40: 2,000,000-4,000,000, 300,000 ante

WPT North American Poker Championship, Day 2 Recap By Tom Bostic After three start days, The North American Poker Challenge finally put all players in contention for the World Poker Tour Title in the same room. 275 players stated the day at noon, occupying every table in the tournament area. Many short stacked players were eliminated early in the day, including Mark Seif, John “The Razor” Phan, and much to the dismay of Canadian poker fans everywhere, Daniel Negreanu. Negreanu never seemed to be able to get much going and was eliminated when he ran his Ace-Queen into the pocket aces of his opponent. |:img:6170,R:|Softening the blow of Daniels exit is the resurgence of fellow Canadian, Gavin smith. Smith is originally from Guelph, Ontario which is less than 80 miles away from Fallsview Casino. Gavin not only has a World Poker Tour Championship under his belt, but in Season Four earned the title of WPT Player of the year. His cashes in major tournaments over the past year have been few and far between, however, with the chip lead at 405,900 Smith has set himself up for a deep run. The chips did not come easy though, as he sat at easily the toughest table of the tournament so far. He was joined by three other WPT Champions in Mike “Sirwatts” Watson, J.C. Tran and Barry Greenstein. Smith seemed to thrive in the tough competition as he built the majority of his stack while seated at the table. In fact, while Smith was on the uptick at the table, the three other players all saw their stacks diminish. Play ended after five levels and additional ten minutes when we hit the magic number of 99 players. Some notable players that will return tomorrow to join Gavin Smith will be Kathy Liebert, “Miami” John Cernuto, Joe Sebok, Lee Markholt, J.C. Tran, Barry Greenstein and the latest WPT poker made millionaire, Vivek Rajkumar. Here’s a look at our leader board going into tomorrow: 1. Gavin Smith - 405,900 2. Matt Matros - 383,800 3. Vivek "Flog" Rajkumar - 342,100 4. Ryan Fisler - 327,500 5. Robert Cheung - 316,100 6. Mark "ScrubbyZ" Zajdner - 312,600 7. Scott Wilson - 305,100 8. Kathy Liebert - 298,300 These players and others will be vying for a $4.37 million dollar prize pool that was announced early in the day. The payouts will start at 45th place at $ 17,498 CAD, just under twice the buy-in. As for the biggest paydays of them all, here are the payouts for the final six that make the televised final table: 1st: $1,250,352 CAD 2nd: $612,427 CAD 3rd: $319,337 CAD 4th: $262,469 CAD 5th: $196,851 CAD 6th: $153,107 CAD Join us tomorrow at 12pm ET when we return for more action at the North American Poker Championship where you can find up to the minute chip counts, live updates and video interviews by Amanda Leatherman.
