Day 1A Recap

Level 8: 800,000-1,600,000, 300,000 ante

The biggest stop on the WPT calendar got off with a bang today. 304 players arrived to fill out the first half of the field, with 226 surviving the carnage. At $25,000 a seat, you know that there’s no such thing as ‘mere survival’ here. Our chip leader is Anna Wroblewski. The twenty-one year old Vietnamese-American started the day off with a bang, winning a three-way all-in where her nut flush defeated two flopped sets. Five days ago, Anna was broke, but she qualified via satellite for the $3,000 event she won earlier this week. If today is any indication, her run is far from over. Joining Anna at the top of the leader board? Shannon Shorr, LAPC champion Eric Hershler and our own Isaac Haxton, proving it never hurts to give back a little. Also surviving the day were returning winners Joe Bartholdi and Martin de Knijff, Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Barry Greenstein and outgoing WPT Player of the Year Gavin Smith. Sunday at noon PST, the second half of the field will convene. Amongst them will be JC Tran, Grinder Mizrachi, Daniel Negreanu and maybe even the one and only Doyle Brunson. Be sure to check back tomorrow for all of the action. Live Updates will have it covered. Have a good night.

Day End

Level 8: 800,000-1,600,000, 300,000 ante

I finished up at 131,700, very pleased with that. I think that puts me in the top 5, definitely top 10. I’m looking forward to my day off tomorrow, it’ll give me a chance to look around for a place to live in Vegas this summer. I’m really excited to be living here June-August to play in the World Series and all the other summer tournaments.

Haxton Edges Rousso

Level 8: 800,000-1,600,000, 300,000 ante

On a flop of Kdiamond6heart2club Vanessa Rousso bets T2,500 from middle position. Isaac Haxton raises to T10,000 and Rousso calls. The turn card is the Qheart and both players check. The river card is the 9heart and Haxton fires out T10,000. Rousso goes into the tank for a few minutes, speaking softly to herself while replaying the hand in her mind. She eventually calls and Haxton flips over AheartQdiamond. Rousso mucks and Haxton now has T135,000.

A Remarkable Feat

Level 8: 800,000-1,600,000, 300,000 ante

Last week, I was doing some research on the 1995 World Series of Poker when I came upon some information that suggested a feat that might be the most remarkable in poker history. In 1995, Dan Harrington defeated Howard Goldfarb in the final to take the title. This much is widely known. Harrington also won a $2,500 buy-in NL Hold'em event that year. This much is easily found through research on the Internet. The first thing I found out though, was that those two were the only events he played in. Two events, two victories. Pretty remarkable stuff. Still, not as stratospheric as my allusions. I then found out that Dan played in one satellite for each event, winning a single-table to qualify for the $2,500, and lasting through a large super-satellite to qualify for the main event. Harrington played in four events in 1995; the Main, the $2,500, and those two satellites, and never was eliminated. Think about that. Variance can account for a lot of strange things in this game, but it requires a special kind of player to play with a steady enough hand to not avoid elimination through four tournaments. Harrington is mostly remembered now for his back-to-back final tables in 2003 and 2004, but between the two feats, I have to think the run of '95 was the more impressive. Action Dan may not have the most electric of personalities, but the man can flat out play. He's one of the unappreciated greats.
