Day 1A Recap

Level 6: 150,000-300,000, 30,000 ante

After a rash of loud, boisterous day ones, we needed to calm down a little. Today, we got that wish granted, as 206 quiet players came to play on day 1A of the Foxwoods Poker Classic. With our event in Reno just finishing and the early knockouts from there traveling to Monte Carlo, a largely ambiguous field produced from its ranks Ralph Perry as our 1A chip leader. Perry, who finished third in the 2002 WSOP Main event and won a bracelet there this past summer, has never final tabled a World Poker Tour. Now, with a towering T140,500 at the end of one day, he’s got his best shot yet. Joining Perry on the leader board? Bay 101 fourth place finisher James Van Alstyne, prop-bet master Bill Gazes and cash game monster Matthew Glantz. Chau Giang, Gavin Smith and John Hennigan are amongst the other survivors heading to day two. Saturday, the second half of the field will gather at noon EST. We expect a few more players and a few more faces as the defeated players from Monte Carlo red-eye back to get into the tournament. Check back then for a few of their horror stories and closer looks at Nenad Medic and Daniel Negreanu. See you then.

Set Over Set Eliminates Last Year's Runner Up

Level 6: 150,000-300,000, 30,000 ante

Alex Jacob was eliminated after his pocket 8's hit a set on the flop, but were bested by a set of aces. Alex was last year's runner up in this same event. Since then, the young poker phenom has emerged as one of the most impressive young stars of the game. Unfortunately we will not be seeing Alex make a repeat run at the final table here, but keep your eyes out for him at future events.

Who Are These Guys?

Level 6: 150,000-300,000, 30,000 ante

With many of our biggest names absent, a brief reminder of who some of our chip leaders are: Ralph Perry – Third place finisher in the 2002 World Series, bracelet winner in 2006. Perry’s unfortunate legacy in the TV era is a tilted loss to Tony G at the Intercontinental Poker Championship. Still, he’s a solid citizen. James Van Alstyne – A mathematical genius, Van Alstyne looked great en route to a final table finish at Bay 101. James has been playing with a renewed confidence over the last couple of months. With a big stack and a relatively weak field, he’s got a real chance to do some damage here. Curt Kohlberg – A solid citizen whose biggest win came in a $5,000 buy-in event at Festa al Lago in 2003, Kohlberg often cashes but seldom cracks the single digits. Look for him to nurse his stack and play a while. Bill Gazes – A gambler’s gambler, Gazes is a candidate to go bust or take the chip lead. He’ll play his chips with abandon and risk them at a blink. Bill has cashed three times at each of the last two WSOPs. He’s also final tabled twice at WPT’s finishing third in the 2005 World Poker Final and fourth in the 2004 LA Poker Classic.. Cliff Josephy – Chances are you’ve heard of Josephy, but it’s likely by his other name; JohnnyBax. As Bax, Cliff has been one of the top online tournament players in the world for the last three years. In live play, Josephy may be best known for winning a bracelet in a $1,500 Seven Card Stud event in the 2005 WSOP when he’d never played the game before that event. Chau Giang – Profitable in the big game, called by some as the best Omaha player in the world, final table at the LA Poker Classic this year…I don’t need to tell you much more about this guy. One of the greats with a personality to match. Eric Froehlich – In 2005, Friehlich set the record for the youngest player to ever win a WSOP bracelet. When Jeff Madsen broke that record this year, Froehlich set the record for the youngest player with two bracelets. Madsen broke that one too, but that doesn’t lessen the magnitude of Froehlich’s accomplishment. Amnon Filippi – a monster cash game player, Amnon may be feeling inspired this week. One of his closest friends in the game, JC Tran, just won the World Poker challenge in Reno.

Perry Playing Big Stack Poker

Level 6: 150,000-300,000, 30,000 ante

On a board of Aclub9club5diamond8club Ralph Perry re-raises his opponent by using a fistfull of blue T10,000 chips. His opponent folds and Perry rakes in another pot. He is still amongst the chip leaders with about T100,000.
