Day 2 Ends after Two Hours of Play on the Money Bubble

Level 17: 2,500-5,000, 500 ante

Playing down from 143 to the final 36 players seemed like a tall order at the start of Day 2 at the World Poker Tour Lucky Hearts Poker Open, but the speed of play was brisk and we played down to hand-for-hand play on the money bubble before midnight. The toughest elimination proved to be the bubble once again though, and after nearly two hours of play the bubble finally burst when John DiBella left the field in 37th place around 2 a.m. Every player remaining will now take home at least $7,795 in prize money tomorrow when play begins at 1 p.m. ET.

The chip leader when cards get back into the air will be Hayden Fortini with 946,000. Other huge stacks are Tony Ruberto (835,000), and Evan Teitelbaum (814,500). Notables still in the hunt include Matt Giannetti, Joe Serock, Danny Shiff, Vinny Spadavecchia, Lily Kiletto, Marsha Wolak, Mike Beasley, Larry Sharp, Darryll Fish, Matt Salsberg, and Justin Zaki.

Notables that missed the money today include Champions Club members Noah Schwartz, Matt Waxman, Tommy Vedes, Victor Ramdin, Steve Brecher, Ravi Raghavan, Jonathan Roy, Jonathan Little, and Dwyte Pilgrim. Other big names that made an exit on Day 2 were Kathy Liebert, Amanda Musumeci, Dan O’Brien, Allen Kessler, Adam Levy, Leo Margets, Tony Cousineau, and Matt Stout.

Tune back in tomorrow to follow the poker action as the field plays from the final 36 all the way down to the WPT final table of six here at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in South Florida.

The Money Bubble Finally Busts

Level 17: 2,500-5,000, 500 ante

On a board reading Kspade9heart7heart5spade John DiBella is all in for 47,000 on the big blind and Hayden Fortini calls on the cutoff. DiBella holds 8diamond6spade and Fortini flips over 9spade8spade.

The 2spade falls on the river and another very long money bubble is brought to a merciful end. The players began to bag and tag their chips after the hand and Fortini is the overnight chip leader after busting DiBella on the money bubble.

Matthew Salsberg Wins a Small Pot With Queens

Level 17: 2,500-5,000, 500 ante

Matthew Salsberg raises under the gun to 15,000, and the big blind calls. The flop comes Adiamond4spade3heart, the big blind checks, Salsberg bets 15,000, and the big blind calls.

The turn is the 9heart, and both players check. The river is the 5diamond, and they check again.

The big blind shows 7club7spade, but Salsberg turns over QdiamondQspade to win the pot.

Short Stack Avoids a Trap With Pocket Jacks

Level 17: 2,500-5,000, 500 ante

Mark Darner raises under the gun to 11,000, the short-stacked button calls, and Chris Bolek reraises from the small blind to 36,500. Darner folds, and the short stack calls.

The flop comes Kheart10club7diamond, and both players check. The turn is the 8heart, and they check again.

The river is the 3heart, and Bolek bets 27,000. The short stack calls quickly, and Bolek shows QdiamondQspade. The short stack pauses a moment before turning over JclubJspade. The short-stacked player loses the pot, but stayed alive in a spot where a lot of players would have gotten it all in preflop and gone broke.

Chris Bolek  -  745,000  (149 bb)
Unknown Short Stack  -  77,000  (15 bb)

Matthew Salsberg Doubles Thru Tony Ruberto

Level 17: 2,500-5,000, 500 ante

WPT Champions Club member Tony Ruberto raises UTG+1 to 12,500, Matthew Salsberg moves all in for 53,500, and Ruberto calls with Aspade10diamond. Salsberg turns over AdiamondKclub, and he's a dominant favorite to double up.

A floorperson quickly reminds the players to keep their hands concealed, because there is still action commencing at another table. (Knowing the short-stack is ahead or behind preflop could affect decisions at other tables.)

Eventually, the other action comes to an end, and Ruberto and Salsberg turn over their hands officially. Just as before, Salsberg's AdiamondKclub dominates Ruberto's Aspade10diamond. Ruberto tells the table that he is rooting for a spade flush rather than a ten.

The board comes Jdiamond9club6spade2heart6heart, and Salsberg wins the pot with his king kicker to double up in chips.

Matthew Salsberg  -  117,500  (23 bb)
Tony Ruberto  -  788,000  (157 bb)

Larry Sharp Triples Up

Level 17: 2,500-5,000, 500 ante

Evan Teitelbaum raises to 12,000 from the hi-jack preflop and Mohammed Jaafar calls from the cutoff. Larry Sharp then shoves all in for 33,000 (6 bb). Both of his opponents call and then they check down a board reading Qheart4club2heart9club10club. Jaafar (AspadeQclub) is ahead of Teitelbaum (Jheart3heart), but they are both behind Sharp. He holds pocket kings and triples up to 110,000 to survive.

Level 17 Begins (37 Players Left on the Money Bubble)

Level 17: 2,500-5,000, 500 ante

The players return from break to begin Level 17, with increased blinds of 2,500-5,000 and a 500 ante. With 37 players remaining, the average chip stack is about 300,000.

The field is still on the money bubble. The next player to bust will receive nothing, while the other 36 will be guaranteed at least $7,795.

As soon as the money bubble bursts, action will end for this evening.

Mohammed Jaafar Busts the 38th-Place Finisher

Level 16: 2,000-4,000, 500 ante

The cutoff moves all in preflop for 35,500 and both Ben Tarzia (big blind) and Mohammed Jaafar (hi-jack) call. The flop rolls out Qdiamond10heart5club and Jaafar bets Tarzia off the hand. "I hope you get a big piece of it," says Tarzia as he tosses his cards into the muck.

Jaafar: Qclub10club
Cutoff: AclubQspade

Turn and River: 6heart8heart

Jaafar indeed got a piece of the flop with two pair, and it was enough to eliminate his opponent in 38th place to take play in this tournament down to hand-for-hand action on the money bubble.
