Jonathan Jaffe Leads a Wide-Open Field at Foxwoods
Level 11: 1,200-2,400, 300 ante
WPT Foxwoods World Poker Finals, Day 2 Recap By BJ Nemeth As the WPT World Poker Finals finished its second day at Foxwoods, Jonathan Jaffe distanced himself from the field by building his stack up to 522,000 -- 41% more than the second-place player. While that's a solid lead, history tells us that the chipleader with 91 players left rarely wins the tournament. A glance at the leaderboard reveals another potential advantage for Jaffe, as there are no major players among the top ten in chip counts. However, looking a little deeper, there are some heavy hitters who might still be considered favorites in this tournament with above-average stacks: Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Freddy Deeb, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Gavin Smith, and Kevin "BelowAbove" Saul. Here's a look at the top five, along with the notables who are above the average of 131,000: 1. Jonathan Jaffe - 522,000 2. Larry Greenberg - 370,200 3. Arthur Azen - 350,000 4. Adam Lippert - 338,200 5. Charles Marchese - 322,700 12. Freddy Deeb - 258,400 13. Chris Ferguson - 239,800 19. Kevin "BelowAbove" Saul - 199,700 24. Phil Ivey - 187,900 25. Gavin Smith - 187,800 32. Daniel Negreanu - 148,900 Day 3 action begins tomorrow (Saturday) at 12:00 noon ET. Chip Confusion
Level 10: 1,000-2,000, 300 ante
At Freddy Deeb's table, there was some confusion over the chip colors, and it almost affected the action. The purple (500) chips are very difficult to distinguish from the grey (5,000) chips. Apparently, a player put out four grey chips and a purple chip, and the dealer mis-announced the amount as lower than the 20,500 it actually was. There was some debate over what would have happened if Deeb had called the incorrect amount announced by the dealer, and a floorperson was called over to answer a bunch of hypothetical situations. It was never satisfactorily resolved, especially since there was no actual situation to discuss. But the moral of the story? The 5,000 chips are easily mistaken for the 500 chips, and it makes chip counts (by the media and the players) difficult.
