Lee Markholt Takes the Chip Lead

Level 40: 2,000,000-4,000,000, 300,000 ante

Steve Paul Ambrose opens the pot for a raise of 2,200 and is re-raised by Lee Markholt to 8,200 from late position. Steve then re-raises to 22,500 total and Markholt makes the call. The flop comes 10club10spade5spade and Steve Paul Ambrose bets 16,500 into the 47,000 pot. Markholt makes the call. The turn brings the Aheart and both players freeze action in the large pot and check. The river is the 3club and Steve bets 32,000, leaving him with just under 50,000 chips. Markholt goes into the tank. He thinks about his decision as he stacks chips over and over again. Looking at a board of 10spade10club5spadeAheart3clubMarkholt says "I can beat jacks" and continues to think about bet. Finally he makes the call. Before Markholt even flips over his cards Steve Paul-Ambrose says "queens are good" as Markholt shows QheartQdiamond. Markholt takes down the 112,000 pot to take a chip lead early in the day. He now has 200,300.

Table 27: Daniel Negreanu vs. Steven Van Zadelhoff

Level 40: 2,000,000-4,000,000, 300,000 ante

Table 27 looks like it'll be an interesting table, with Daniel Negreanu, Steven Van Zadelhoff, and Jordan Rich. We'll be keeping an eye on it, but it will be the fourth table broken today, so it won't last too long. Zachary Fellows min-raises from early position to 1,600, Negreanu calls from middle position, and Van Zadelhoff calls from the big blind. The flop comes Kdiamond7club4heart, and all three players check. The turn card is the 6diamond, Van Zadelhoff bets 3,600, Fellows folds, and Negreanu calls. The river card is the Aspade, and Van Zadelhoff and Negreanu both check. Steven Van Zadelhoff shows 8spade4club for a pair of fours with a gutshot straight draw on the turn, and Negreanu mucks. Van Zadelhoff takes the pot worth more than 13,000, building his stack to about 63,000. Negreanu drops down to about 19,000.

Darus "November Nine" Suharto Tops Day 1c

Level 40: 2,000,000-4,000,000, 300,000 ante

WPT North American Poker Championship, Day 1c Recap By BJ Nemeth As the weekend comes to a close, the three starting days of the WPT North American Poker Championship are in the books. There were 166 players that started on Sunday (Day 1c), pushing the total field size to 454. That comes in 50 players short of last year's total, but is still larger than expected. Daniel Negreanu, the winningest poker player in Canadian history, took his seat today to take a shot at a major title on Canadian soil. While Negreanu survived the day, he faces a difficult road as he advances to Day 2 with a below-average chip stack. A few of the other big-name players weren't even that fortunate, as Negreanu's friends Erick Lindgren (WSOP Player of the Year) and John Juanda (WSOP Europe Main Event winner) both failed to advance. Carlos Mortensen, the only player in history to win both the WSOP Main Event and the WPT World Championship, also busted out on Day 1c. While the tournament field is set at 454, the official prizepool has yet to be announced, but it is estimated to be worth around $4.4 million. First place should be worth more than $1 million, and the final six players will be featured on the WPT's televised final table on Thursday, October 16th. Here are the top 10 chipleaders from Day 1c: 1. Darus Suharto - 188,000 2. Stephen Chidwick - 165,700 3. Kenan Zhang - 155,800 4. Steve Paul-Ambrose - 136,900 5. Dashmir Zyli - 136,900 6. Erik Cajelais - 109,800 7. K.C. Yuen - 104,300 8. Vivek Rajkumar - 99,600 9. Gueorgui Tchaouchki - 89,500 10. Mike "Timex" McDonald - 86,900 Suharto is one of the WSOP's "November Nine," scheduled to resume playing the final table of the WSOP Main Event in less than a month. His 188,000 will put him in second place (behind Day 1b's Jamie Rosen) as the combined field heads to Day 2. Rajkumar, fresh from his victory in the WPT Borgata Poker Open a few weeks ago, is poised to make a deep run here as well. Day 2 begins tomorrow (Monday) at 12:00 noon ET, and play will continue for seven levels (with a dinner break) or until the field reaches 99 players, whichever comes first.
