Live Tournament Updates

This...is...going...slowly

Level 40: 1,000,000-2,000,000, 300,000 ante

As Tony Berns just said, we should be on dial-up for the remainder of the tournament, seeing as to how a hi-speed modem hardly suits the surrounding environment. Thus far, this has been the slowest progressing WPT day I've attended. 6.5 hours in, we've lost 28 players, which means we should be done some time in late 2008. We had one hand go seven ways to the flop and check through the river...seriously. I'm trying to figure out how I'm supposed to cover this tournament and the one in Foxwoods two weeks from now simultaneously. We just got lapped by an old lady on a walker. Turtles point at us and laugh. If this were Survivor, no one would ever get voted off. We've extended our stay by two weeks, and there are fears at WPT the hotel may run us out of money. Tournament Organizers have announced there will be siestas between each round. Blinds have been reduced to $0/$0 in an attempt to speed up folds. Since the beginnning of this tournament, the following have occured: - The falls dried up. - I recieved my pension. - Macau has opened for business. - Internet gambling in the US has been criminalized on three seperate occasions. - Puerto Rico obtained independance. - Peace has been established in the Middle East. - All disease has been cured. - We've colonized Mars. - World hunger is no more. Congratulations to the Chicago Cubs, who just won their fourteenth World Series in the last twenty years. This is going to be a long, long night.

Regulations

Level 40: 1,000,000-2,000,000, 300,000 ante

Canadian gambling regulations have led to some unusual rulings in this tournament. It has just been announced that players will no longer be allowed to use iPods or MP3 players in the tournament. Additionally, no photography is allowed in the tournament area, even by the WPT. - In other news, Niagara Falls has reached the mouth of Lake Erie and we've still have more than 240 players in today's half of the field.

Tread Lightly ...

Level 40: 1,000,000-2,000,000, 300,000 ante

Players jockey for chips before the dinner break, but no one wants to jeopardize too much of their stack. Some sample hands from the last few minutes: On a board of 7club4diamond3club seat one bets T500, seat two calls and John D'Agostino raises to T2,000. Seat five gets out of the way and the action is back on seat one who folds. Seat two goes into the tank for a few minutes and eventually folds. In seat seven, Steve Paul Ambrose bets T600 under the gun pre-flop and two opponents call. The flop comes Aspade8spade5diamond and Ambrose bets out T1,000. Seat eight folds and the action comes back around to the button in seat six. The six seat raises T4,000 and Ambrose folds.

Ryan Lucchesi, Fountain of Knowledge

Level 40: 1,000,000-2,000,000, 300,000 ante

Ryan Lucchesi is a big man. At 6’6?, he’s accustomed to towering over all. His willingness to take the abuse that comes with doing the hand coverage for worldpokertour.com--under Tony Berns and I--has to be tough. Despite his ability to reach the top shelf and hit his head on door frames, Ryan was hired for his diligence to detail and his skillful pen. When we arrived here, I quickly came to realize he’d spent some two weeks in deep research on all things Niagara Falls. It seemed like a thing that needed to be exploited. As we stood watching the seventh wonder of the world last night, Ryan started launching all kinds of ‘interesting’ facts: “The American side is known as the Bridal Falls, while the Canadian side is known as the Horseshoe Falls? How fitting a poker tournament would be held at the mouth of the Horseshoe Falls! “Only one person has ever survived an unassisted trip over the falls, a seven year old child who fell out of a boat upstream. Remarkably, he had no injuries.? Really? Fascinating. “Someone tried to go over the falls in a Kayak once. They died.? That’s hardly a revelation… “Over ten million bathtubs of water go over the falls every hour? How the hell do they count a bathtub? “Due to erosion, it’s slowly moving south. In 25,000 years it will be at the mouth of Lake Erie.? You really have far too much time on your hands… “The lights illuminating the falls turn off promptly at midnight.? He figured that out as he was positioning his camera. “The maid of the mist closed yesterday for the winter.? …and with that, a tear fell across his cheek. What a dork.

Tough Talk

Level 40: 1,000,000-2,000,000, 300,000 ante

Barry Greenstein just moved tables with a little over the average stack, joining Allen Kessler’s table. Barry brings a copy of his book Ace on the River to sign and give to whoever knocks him out of the tournament. “I’ve been trying to win that book for two years.? Kessler remarked. As a point of interest, I asked if he’d ever read it, and told me he’d only leafed through it. Barry smiled; “Until he reads it, he won’t win it.? A little fuel on the fire.

"Ace-High Good?"

Level 40: 1,000,000-2,000,000, 300,000 ante

On a board of Jspade10heart3spade10spade Carlos Mortensen quickly bets T500. Seat eight calls and the river card is the Jheart, Mortensen checks. Seat eight thinks for a second. With a smirk on his face Mortensen remarks, "Ace-High is good." Seat eight laughs and turns over 10diamond4diamond. Mortensen shows a single card, the Qheart and mucks his hand.
