Gavin Smith Dumps His Aces to Survive

Level 40: 1,000,000-2,000,000, 300,000 ante

|:img:4014,R:|With the board showing 8club7diamond4heart6club on the turn, Gavin Smith checks from the big blind, the player in middle position bets 4,500, and the button calls. Gavin Smith flashes his pocket aces to me before he folds. The river card is the 9diamond, the middle-position player checks, the button moves all in for about 10,000, and his opponent reluctantly calls. The button shows Jclub10club for the nut jack-high straight. (He had also picked up a flush draw on the turn.) The middle-position player shows his Qdiamond5diamond for a (losing) nine-high straight on the turn. The player on the button doubles up. Gavin Smith escaped from the hand with about 13,000 in chips.

Pete Giordano Busted

Level 40: 1,000,000-2,000,000, 300,000 ante

Pete Giordano bets 4,000 from late position preflop and Tuan Lam raises to 10,000 from middle position after limping the first time through. Giordano calls and the flop rolls out 8spade5heart2club. Giordano then starts to grab all of his chips to move all in, thinking that Lam has already acted. The dealer stops him and then Lam bets 10,000. Giordano does not sway from his prior action and indeed moves all in. Lam calls and flips over pocket aces. Giordano flips up pocket kings and the turn and river come 4heart5diamond. Giordano is eliminated on the hand and Lam now has 80,000.
