Unstoppable?

Level 12: 150,000-300,000, 30,000 ante

Man, E.G. Harvin has become an unstoppable juggernaut. We’re less than an hour in and with his elimination of Michael Omelchuk, he’s now eliminated three players as his stack continues to bloom. This could be one of the fastest final tables ever if this keeps up.

Foxwoods' Past

Level 12: 150,000-300,000, 30,000 ante

When we look back at the history of the WPT at Foxwoods, we see one discernable truth: Foxwoods breeds stars. Time and again, we’ve seen power-packed final tables full of the top pros on the planet going noggin to noggin in the fight for poker supremacy and millions of dollars. As a primer on Foxwoods past, we’ve prepared a little look back at what’s transpired here in the first four seasons of the WPT’s World Poker Finals. Here’s a recounting of what’s gone down. 2002 – Talk about a way to start a legacy, the 2002 World Poker Final may have featured the strongest final table in WPT history. Start with ‘best player in the world’ Phil Ivey, throw in two two-time WPT champions and three other seasoned professionals. There won’t be many tables as strong as this one any time soon. 2003 – The next year, we saw what evolved into one of the classic rivalries in WPT histry. Phil Hellmuth never disappoints the cameras and this was no exception as the audience delighted in Phil being owned as he seldom is by the soft-spoken, black-hatted Alabama cowboy, Hoyt Corkins. Time and again, Corkins would make his hand later than Hellmuth liked. Phil paid him off dutifully time and again, his temperature rising with each hand he lost. Finally, it was Mohamed Ibrahim who finished Hellmuth off in a battle for second: Corkins’ massive lead ensured the victory, and it came just a few hands into heads up play. 2004 – Tuan Le’s emergence was the headline event of the 2004 World Poker Finals. Surviving a star-studded field of Humberto Brenes, Bradley Berman, J.C. Tran and David “The Dragon Pham?, Le went to the finals against semi-pro Temp Hutter. Their clash was a memorable one. Twice, Le moved in on draws and twice Hutter called with the superior hand only to have Le hit his card. Hutter played some fantasic poker, but it ultimately was not his day. Le finally prevailed to take the title and win the seat that would ultimately win that season’s WPT World Championship. 2005 – The final table in 2005 included top pros Allen Cunningham and Bill Gazes along with poker Hall of Famer and WPT Chairman Lyle Berman. None of them, however, could stand up to the might of twenty-one year old prodigy Nick Shulman. After disposing of the pros, Shulman got heads up against “All-In Tony? Licastro, an amateur who’d employed an ‘interesting’ shove or fold approach. There were no in-betweens. Licastro got his money in with 8heart2diamond against Nick’s 9spade6spade on a K-9-8 board with two spades. The turn was 2spade and the river didn’t fill Tony’s boat, Giving ‘The New Kid’ the tournament.
