Live Tournament Updates

James Carroll Wins WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star

Level 35: 150,000-300,000, 50,000 ante

WPT Bay 101 Champ (S12) James Carroll_Giron_7JG2596 James Carroll had won a lot of money playing poker before the start of the World Poker Tour Bay 101 Shooting Star final table but he was still searching for a membership in the WPT Champions Club. Carroll had close to a million in career live earnings according to the Hendon Mob poker database, and close to another $3 million in online earnings according to PocketFives. Tonight he added another $1,256,550 to those totals and he joined the Champions Club when he emerged victorious at another long final table here in San Jose, California. Carroll faced a lot of strong competition tonight but he played solid poker and picked his spots effectively to win the largest Bay 101 Shooting Star Main Event in history. Congratulations to Carroll on his achievement and welcome to the Champions Club.

Here is a look at the chip counts when cards got into the air at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Seat 1.  Nam Le  -  1,715,000  (34 bb)
Seat 2.  Garrett Greer  -  1,235,000  (24 bb)
Seat 3.  Shaun Suller  -  4,200,000  (84 bb)
Seat 4.  Dylan Wilkerson  -  5,850,000  (117 bb)
Seat 5.  James Carroll  -  2,075,000  (41 bb)
Seat 6.  Mukul Pahuja  -  6,470,000  (129 bb)

Garrett Greer came into the final table as the short stack and just 27 hands in he found himself all in for his tournament life. He min-raised to 120,000 on the cutoff and Dylan Wilkerson reraised from the small blind. Greer tanked for a moment and then shoved all in for 1.48 million. Wilkerson called with 9club9heart and he was just ahead of Greer’s 8club8heart The board was dealt Jspade6club4heart9diamond10club and Greer was eliminated in sixth place. He took home $174,080 in prize money at his first WPT final table.

Nam Le was the short stack after that and it didn’t take long to determine his fate. On Hand 42 Nam was all in preflop for 565,000 on the cutoff and Carroll called on the big blind. Nam held Aspade3diamond but he was behind the pocket fives flipped over by Carroll. The board ran out QheartJdiamond2diamond2spade10spade and the Season IV Bay 101 Shooting Star champion was eliminated in fifth place, good for $223,810.

The battle for fourth place was the defining skirmish of the tournament, and it took longer to decide than entire final tables (101 hands). After the elimination of Nam, Shaun Suller doubled on Hand 59, Suller doubled again on Hand 136, and Wilkerson doubled on Hand 139 to cripple Mukul Pahuja. Pahuja then doubled on Hand 141. It should be nothed that during this process each of the final four players held the chip lead at one point in play.

Fourth place was finally decided on Hand 143 when Pahuja moved all in for 1.65 million after Wilkerson opened with a min-raises to 400,000. Wilkerson called and they flipped over their cards. Pahuja held AheartQdiamond and he had Wilkerson (Qclub10spade) dominated for the second time in a row but the board rescued Wilkerson again, falling AspadeKdiamondJspade8heart7heart. The flopped straight for Wilkerson meant that Pahuja was out in fourth place and he would take home $320,800 in prize money. Pahuja also ended the final table with 2,250 WPT Player of the Year points, good for first place in the POY standings.

The battle for third was a little shorter with Suller exiting the tournament on Hand 157. Carroll opened the pot with a min-raise to 400,000 on the button and Suller called on the small blind. Both players checked to the turn on a board dealt Kclub4diamond2spadeJclub. Caroll bet 375,000 and Suller called. The river delivered the Qspade and Suller checked. Carroll bet 1,375,000 and Suller appeared to check-raise all in for 3.8 million, a raises that Carroll called with Aheart10spade. Suller was all in with QdiamondJspade for two pair but it was behind the straight held by Carroll. Suller was out in third place, good for $477,470, and he ended the tournament with 2,150 WPT POY points (second place in the POY standings behind Pahuja).

At the start of heads-up play Carroll held the chip lead with 12,450,000 and Wilkerson was slightly behind with 9,100,000. The two quickly got to even before Carroll started to pull away for good. Just 15 hands into the heads-up final the last hand of the tournament took place.

Wilkerson raised to 500,000 preflop and Carroll called. The flop was dealt 9club4heart2spade and Carroll checked. Wilkerson bet 500,000 and Carroll check-raised to 1.3 million. Wilkerson called and the turn fell 2club. Carroll checked and Wilkerson moved all in for 4.5 million. Carroll called with 6spade4diamond and Wilkerson flipped over Aheart5club.

The river fell Qheart and Wilkerson was eliminated as the runner up in second place. He took home $728,650 in prize money and 1,200 WPT POY points. That puts Wilkerson in third place in the current POY standings with 2,050 points. Carroll captured the top prize worth $1,256,550 (including a $15,400 seat in the WPT World Championship), and he also receives a WPT Champions Trophy and a pair of gold Monster 24K Headphones. Carroll’s name will also be inscribed on the one and only WPT Champions Cup along with all the other WPT winners from the past 12 seasons.

Final Table Results:

1: James Carroll - $1,256,550
2: Dylan Wilkerson - $728,650
3: Shaun Suller - $477,470
4: Mukul Pahuja - $320,800
5: Nam Le - $223,810
6: Garrett Greer - $174,080

Hand #172: James Carroll Wins WPT Bay 101! ($1,256,500)

Level 34: 125,000-250,000, 25,000 ante

WPT Bay 101 Champ (S12) James Carroll_Giron_7JG2617 Dylan Wilkerson min-raises to 500,000, and James Carroll calls.

The flop comes 9club4heart2spade, Carroll checks, Wilkerson bets 500,000, and Carroll check-raises to 1,300,000. Wilkerson calls.

The turn card pairs the board with the 2club, Carroll checks, Wilkerson moves all in for 4,500,000, and Carroll asks for an exact count and thinks for about 30 seconds before he calls with 6spade4diamond (pair of fours).

Wilkerson turns over Aheart5club for ace high with a gutshot straight draw, and he needs to catch an ace, a five, or a three to stay alive.

The river card is the Qheart, and James Carroll wins the pot — and the WPT title — with a pair of fours.

Dylan Wilkerson finishes as the runner-up, earning $728,650.

James Carroll wins the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star, earning $1,256,500, which includes a $15,400 seat into the season-ending WPT World Championship at the Borgata in Atlantic City. Carroll also receives a WPT Champions Trophy, and a pair of gold Monster 24K Headphones. Carroll’s name will be inscribed on the one and only WPT Champions Cup along with all the other WPT winners from the past 12 seasons.

Congratulations to James Carroll!
