Matt Waxman Win WPT Grand Prix de Paris!
Level 28: 30,000-60,000, 10,000 ante
Before the final table started Mat Waxman said to Mike Sexton that he was going to become the first-ever American player to win a World Poker Tour in Paris and he was true to his word as he has just been crowned the WPT Grand Prix de Paris Champion.
The 312 entrants were whittled down to the final six after four long, gruelling, action-packed days of poker. Each of the six players reached the final table on merit and any one of them would have made a worthy champion. The dreams of Martin Jacobson ended on the 27nd hand when he open-shoved from the button with A
J
and was called by Mikko Sundell holding J
J
. The board ran out 3
6
8
10
K
and the final table lost its first player.
Next to go was the aforementioned Sundell on hand #33. The Finn was left with just 32,000 chips after he committed his stack with A
K
on a 7
4
9
flop against Waxman's 6
5
and he could not get there. His chips went into the middle the very next hand and with K
6
and he was eventually up against Byron Kaverman's A
J
and he could not hit any of his outs.
Fourth place went to Kaverman who saw Fred Magen open to 250,000, five times the big blind, and decided to move all in for around 1,500,000 with his Q
9
Magen called with A
7
and when the board ran out Q
10
K
J

Kaverman was eliminated and the tournament was down to three players.
Only 13 more hands took place before Fred Magen's amazing run was over. Magen had gone to work every day this week at 0700 and then come to the Aviation Club de France to take part in this tournament, which he won entry to through a satellite! He played very tightly throughout but when he raised to 160,000 and Waxman came over the top and put him all in, Magen chose K
Q
to call with and found himself in a lot of trouble against the A
K
of the American. Neither player improved and the tournament went to the heads-up stage.
Going into heads-up Waxman held a 7,863,000 to 1,550,000 chip advantage over Hugo Lemaire and it took just three hands to press this home. With blinds at 30,000/60,000/10,000a, Lemaire opened to 130,000 and Waxman made the call. The flop came down 5
3
Q
, Waxman checked, Lemaire bet 145,000, Waxman shoved and Lemaire called! The Frenchman had the best hand with Q
8
against Waxman's 9
8
. The turn was the 6
and the river was the 10
, gifting Waxman a winning flush and the title!
The World Poker Tour now packs its bags and heads Stateside for the Borgata Poker Open before heading back to Europe for the inaugural WPT Malta.
