Yevgeniy Timoshenko Eliminated; Eric Baldwin Effectively Wins 2009 POY
Level 13: 2,000-4,000, 400 ante
Yevgeniy Timoshenko has just been eliminated from the tournament. We don't have the details, but he lost a lot of chips when his aces were cracked in an earlier hand.
Now that both Cimpan and Timoshenko have been eliminated, that effectively ends the race for Card Player Player of the Year. Eric "Basebaldy" Baldwin has a little more than a 1,000-point lead over everyone else, and the only qualifying tournaments left on the schedule won't award enough points to catch him.
Eric Baldwin had a monster year this year, with 17 final tables in live tournaments, and four victories -- including his first WSOP bracelet. He was in third place after the WSOP, and then finished the year really strong to take the lead.
Tournament Director John Nieznanski just made an announcement to the crowd, acknowledging Baldwin but saying that he is too shy to come up on the stage. Baldwin is playing in the Bellagio's $500 tournament today, and had already purchased a one-way ticket to Atlantic City that he would have used if either Cornel Cimpan or Yevgeniy Timoshenko survived the day. He's extremely happy that he won't have to use it.
Congratulations to Eric Baldwin!
