To Register On Time, Or Register Late? That is the Question ...
Level 3: 100-200, 25 ante
With the deep, slow blind structure on Day 1, and the ability to register halfway through Day 2, this tournament has more late registrants than most. So the question becomes, when is the best time to register for this tournament?
Keep in mind that as soon as you register, your chip stack is put into play. Or, if you register late, as soon as enough players show up to start a new table. One of the side effects is that players who register during the first few levels of Day 1 wind up seated with other late registrants -- which tend to be top pros. That makes for some very difficult table draws.
One option would be to pre-register, and then just let your stack of 600 big blinds take a relatively small hit for an hour or two.
There's a bit of a debate as to whether or not it's beneficial to register on Day 2. One theory says those players miss out on a chance to build a big stack on Day 1. The other side claims that starting late increases their chances of cashing, because so many players have already busted. (Which also means there is effectively dead money in the prizepool.)
Looking back at the last Bellagio event, there were 30 players who registered on Day 2. (Some at the start of Day 2, and others at the latest possible time, the end of Level 8.) By the end of Day 2, 20 of those players had busted (two-thirds). That's roughly equal to the percentage of Day 1 starters who survived Day 2, so it appears to have no effect in those terms.
The Day 2 starters who survived to Day 3 were almost exclusively in the bottom half of the chip counts (8 out of 10 were below average). That seems to indicate that they are spending Day 2 at a fairly large disadvantage. (By the end of Day 3, the effect is probably too specific to the individuals to effectively measure the impact without a lot more data.)
Clearly, one tournament is not enough data for a suitable sample size, so we'll keep our eyes on how the Day 2 starters fare.
