Fantasy Fun For Gavin Smith and Jason Mercier

Level 1: 25-50, ante

Jason Mercier and Gavin Smith decided to get a little side action going by doing a fantasy draft of players here in Indiana. Each of them will draft six players, and they'll make money based on how many of their guys cash, how many reach the final table, and how high they finish at the final table.

With his overall first pick, Gavin took two-time WPT winner and Season VI Player of the Year Jonathan Little.

Gavin later tried to select Len Ashby with one of his picks, but there was a bit of an issue. Ashby has already knocked out a player and has doubled his starting stack. Mercier cried foul, suggesting Gavin didn't even know who Ashby was prior to the elimination. But Gavin selected Ashby anyway, saying Mercier couldn't tell him to pick or who not to pick.

Gavin added, "Of course I knew who Len Ashby is! Who doesn't know who Len Ashby is? Len Ashby is the guy who bet $100 on St. Mary's!" Gavin had made a bet with Ashby on the NCAA tournament game showing on the big screens around the room, with Gavin taking #2 seed Villanova against #10 seed St. Mary's -- and the underdog won. Gavin took a $100 bill out of his wallet and tossed it at Ashby. Ashby said they'd make another bet, double or nothing.

So who has heard of Len Ashby? It's not a name you hear often on the WPT circuit, but he is well known in this part of the country.  Ashby is a cash game grinder from nearby Louisville, Kentucky with a number of PLO scores on his poker resume.
