An Tran has had a life full of challenges and risk, so it's no surprise that poker has become his chosen profession. As a young man growing up in Vietnam, he served as a Green Beret Lieutenant in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. It was during that time in the military that he became a proficient five-card stud player during the long hours and close quarters with fellow soldiers. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, though, An wanted a better life for himself, escaped Vietnam, and made the transition to the United States, setting up a home in Houston, Texas. He took his skills as a martial arts expert and opened a karate studio and enjoyed his first five years in America running the business.

An moved to Las Vegas in the mid-1980's to pursue poker as a profession. He quickly that he had the focus and tenacity to make a living from the game, and though cash games were always his main, steady source of income, he began to see the benefits of tournament play. Near the end of that decade, he was showing the poker world what he was made of by cashing in two World Series of Poker events in 1989 " one of which was a final table in the $2,000 no-limit hold'em event " and cashing twice the following year as well.

It only took An until 1991 to win his first bracelet at the WSOP in the $1,500 pot-limit Omaha event, and later in the same WSOP, he made another final table and placed fourth in the $5,000 pot-limit Omaha. To date, he has made a total of 22 WSOP final tables. In addition, he has a World Poker Tour final table to his credit from the 2006 Gold Strike World Poker Open; he finished fourth in that tournament. He has accumulated over $2.5 million in his poker tournament career alone thus far, and it seems we will be seeing much more of An Tran at final tables everywhere in the years to come.
