Prior to Season IX, the thought of a guy coming from out of nowhere to take WPT Player of the Year honors was unheard of. This was an honor reserved for seasoned vets and established pros. Then Andy Frankenberger came out of nowhere and, in the span of the year, won a WPT title, picked up a second WPT final table, and bested a group of tough competition to earn the title of Player of the Year.

Frankenberger landed on the map with his victory at Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino. The Duke grad picked up $750,000 for defeating a field of 462 runners. Just two months later, Frankenberger was back in the WPT spotlight thanks to a fifth place finish at Festa al Lago at Bellagio. Throw in a top twenty finish at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic in December of 2010 and you have a recipe for POY success.

When the New Yorker left his job on Wall Street running an equity derivatives desk in ’09, he had no idea what his next career would be. He only decided to become a professional poker player the following year.. Now that he has a WPT title, POY honors, a WSOP bracelet and more than $1.8 million in earnings in the span of a year, it looks like Frankenberger made a great trade.
