Poker fans and players know Barry Shulman as the owner-publisher of CardPlayer magazine, but there's a lot about him they may not know. He was born in Seattle. He played poker as a hobby while he earned an accounting degree from the University of Washington. After graduation, he began a long and successful career in real estate in the Seattle area. He and his wife moved to Las Vegas to retire in the 1990s.

Shulman says he wasn't very good at retiring and needed something to occupy his mind, so he began playing poker again. He bought CardPlayer in 1998. At the time, it was just a casino handout. He grew the publication from handout to the must-have publication for poker players.

Shulman has won several major poker tournaments, and he often places in the money in ones he doesn't win. He has played in a number of World Poker Tour events, including his final table appearance at the Ultimate Poker Classic in Season 2. He took fourth in that event, winning more than $112,000. He has a very busy schedule as owner of CardPlayer, which includes traveling to poker tournaments around the world.
