Dedicated to his hometown of Salem, New Hampshire, Bruce Kater has remained there through the years. During his childhood, he recalls playing poker games with his family for pennies, then increasing the stakes as the years passed. But his true passion always seemed to be in the medicinal field, and after many years of education and training, he became a family practitioner in a community health center in Salem. He has always cared deeply for his community and the people in it, so to cater to his patients has brought him much joy through the years.

A little after the turn of the century, Bruce noticed the poker boom and returned to his childhood love of poker. He dedicated quite a bit of time to brushing up on the game and playing when possible in East Coast casinos or during vacations to various gaming-friendly locations around the United States. While cash games remain his focus when he's not practicing medicine, he has given the tournament circuit a second look.

In October of 2004, Bruce cashed in a preliminary event at the World Poker Finals in Foxwoods, and a month later, he placed ninth in a no-limit hold'em tournament at the St. Maarten Open. By 2006, he had taken his tournament game to a new level and played in the World Poker Tour's Foxwoods Poker Classic. After plowing through a stellar crowd of professional players, he ended up at the final table and cashed out in sixth place for a payday of over $165,000. If the doctor's passion and determination are any indication of his future in poker, the poker world will be seeing Bruce again.
