He may be a Frenchman, but Christophe Savary could justifiably call himself Mr. Marrakech. Since 2008, Savary has cashed in ten events in the Moroccan metropolis, including a win in 2010’s Marrakech Poker Open worth more than $240,000. It is only fitting then that Savary was the man on top of the biggest poker tournament ever held on African soil, Season VIII’s WPT Marrakech event.

The tournament was the tour’s first foray on African soil and it was a huge success, as 416 players turned up for the €4,500 buy-in event. While one Frenchman, Ludovic Lacay, dominated the late stages of the event, it was Savary who ended up in the winner’s circle, defeating Eoghan O’Dea of Ireland heads-up for the title and the top prize of €379,014.
