Chris Ackerman started playing poker as a young boy in Hackettstown, New Jersey. His mother, Loren, taught gifted education and supported his poker playing as long as he kept up his grades. When he was a teenager, Ackerman says he played poker for baseball cards. He says he always felt like poker came naturally to him. His passion for the game grew throughout high school and college, where he studied finance.
Ackerman's college education has affected what he does with his poker bankroll. He says he wants to stay on the right path and manage his money correctly. Ackerman says to do that, he plans to avoid playing games such as blackjack and craps. He says he wants to focus on playing smart. He has developed a reputation among his opponents as being a smart and patient player.
In the final month of college, Ackerman went deep in the World Poker Finals, where he played against some legends of poker. He had to skip school to play in the tournament, but he wasn't surprised at how far he made it. There at Foxwoods casino in 2003, Ackerman made his first World Poker Tour final table. He finished 4th in the $10,000 No-Limit Hold 'em event, taking home nearly $227,000. He's made two other WPT final tables since then: The Borgata Poker Open in 2004 and 2005. The following year, he teamed up with his educator mom to publish a book. "Talkin' About Poker" is a guide to help parents of young poker players understand the game, its culture, and its pitfalls. The book answers a lot of the questions Ackerman's own parents had when he started becoming more passionate about playing poker. It also serves as a guide for parents to communicate more effectively with their young poker players. Ackerman says communicating with his parents has been an important part in the process of becoming a successful professional poker player. So far, those successes have earned him more than $317,000.
