Darrell Dicken lived much of his life in the small town of Waterloo, Iowa, which may be the reason for his quiet demeanor that remains a signature part of his personality to this day. He took an interest in online poker when its popularity grew, and with a mind for the detailed strategy and mathematical abilities that make for a good player, he took to the game quickly.
Moving up in limits came naturally for Darrell, and he quickly grew to be one of the most recognized and well-respected players on the Internet under the pseudonym ‘Gigabet.’ He was playing approximately 18 hours each day and was feared at the tables for his by-the-book plays but also for his ability to throw in an unorthodox play when it was least expected. His reputation preceded him when he decided to enter the world of live tournament play in 2005.
Darrell began racking up the tournament cashes immediately, though his first win didn’t come until that November when he won his first $1000 weekly Bellagio tournament. And he also discovered the World Poker Tour. In October of 2005, he placed 20th WPT’s Festa al Lago event after just emerging from his first World Series of Poker with three cashes – one of which was a final table in Omaha hi-lo. But several months later, he made his first WPT televised final table at the Five Diamond series and finished in fifth place for his biggest cash to that point of over $240,000. In early 2006, he won a WSOP circuit event, then in 2007 found himself at another WPT final table at the Mirage Poker Showdown, taking home nearly $260,000 for his third place finish.Darrell "Gigabet" Dicken. Log onto almost any internet poker room and you'll see a version of the screen name "Gigabet." Some of the players behind the names are mere pretenders, but behind the rest of the names is Waterloo, Iowa's Darrell Dicken. Not yet 30 years old, Dicken has emerged in the online poker world as one of the most feared tournament players in recent memory.
In recent years, Dicken has moved his game from the ethereal poker realm and into brick and mortar casinos. Rather than stay home in the Midwest, Dicken moved his home base to the Bellagio Hotel and Casino. Since then, Dicken has proved his online skills translate very well to live play.
"I've been doing this for a long time, so I am more like 50 years old," Dicken half-joked. "This wears on you. Traveling every week, going somewhere different, it wears on you."
Perhaps the only thing that remains a mystery is how Dicken makes his decisions at the table. His ability to process information frustrates opponents and often rockets Dicken to the top of the field.
"I take the information that is available and I use it," Dicken said. "Some of my plays at the table may seem ridiculous, but if you actually take into account all of the information available, it is almost always the most correct play at the given time, given the image the table has of me and the image that I have of the table."
