Ed Asner is known to a generation as the prototype for all "crusty but benign" TV bosses via his character-defining portrayal of Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. A veteran of hundreds of film and television roles, Mr. Asner was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1981 to 1985. A member of the legendary Compass Players "the predecessor to Chicago's famed Second City" he is the only actor to have won an Emmy award for playing the same character (Grant) in both a comedy (Mary Tyler Moore) and a dramatic series (Lou Grant). He is a fierce, long-time political activist, not to mention a tough, skilled poker player.
