Isaac Haxton was born outside New York City, the son of a poet and a psychiatrist. Haxton's father grew up in Mississippi in a family of writers and artists. He now teaches English at Syracuse University. His mother grew up in New York in a family of doctors. Haxton has always excelled in his education. In fact, he skipped the fifth grade. He went on to study computer science at Brown University, but during a year off to play poker, he decided to change majors when he returned. Haxton says his father has been trying to talk him in to playing poker since he was about four years old, because he could tell Isaac had the mind for it. As a young boy, however, Haxton used that gaming mind to play chess and Magic. He now puts that energy into poker, but he says he still uses some of the same strategy skills.
Isaac Haxton began playing poker in home games while he was in high school, but he started playing seriously during his freshman year of college. Haxton's parents are very supportive of his decision to put his education on hold to pursue his poker dreams. He made enough money playing poker while he was a student to support himself, so they know he's not wasting his time. Haxton considers himself an aggressive and analytical poker player. He played mostly online cash games while he was in college at Brown, but he has since branched out to tournaments. He played a series of tournaments at Turning Stone in 2006 and then he went on to his first World Poker Tour event. Haxton admits he didn't do very well in the Foxwoods tournament, but he made up for it at his next WPT event.
Haxton tore up the pack at the 2007 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Going into the final table, he had a commanding chip lead, nearly half of all the chips in play. It was a young final table. Everyone seated there was under the age of 28. Haxton ended up getting knocked out in second place by Ryan Daut. His consolation prize was an impressive $861,000. Even though he's been very successful at poker, Haxton says he plans to finish his education. When he's not playing poker, he says he likes to read, play video games, and hang out.
