"If you wanna rock, you gotta break the rules." Truer words have never been spoken, and Jack Black has made a career of breaking the rules. From his portrayal of slacker-turned-substitute in Richard Linklater's School of Rock to his breakthrough dramatic role in Peter Jackson's King Kong, Jack Black has smashed traditional definitions of comedic performers.
As a youth, Black attended the Santa Monica-based Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences where he excelled in the dramatic arts. Though he attended UCLA, he dropped out during his sophomore year to focus on his career as a perfomer. It was fellow UCLA student and Actor's Gang pal Tim Robbins who gave Jack his first break in a feature length film - the political mockumentary Bob Roberts - which paved the way for a long list of other comedic appearances, including roles in The Cable Guy, Mars Attacks!, High Fidelity, and Nacho Libre to name a few.
Though he commands impressive box office numbers, Jack Black is perhaps best known as half of the mock-rock musical group Tenacious D, along with fellow UCLA/Actor's Gang comedian Kyle Gass. Tenacious D - the self-professed "greatest band in the world" - has released only two studio albums, but has grown in popularity over the years as a result of their association with other comedic institutions such as David Cross and Bob Odenkirk's "Mr. Show". Black and Gass have also appeared together as various iterations of "the D" in several films including Bio-Dome, Cradle Will Rock, Saving Silverman, and Shallow Hal. Their own feature-length musical film, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, represents the culmination of years of refinement and the evolution of their theatrical roots.
As is evident in his "performance" at the inaugural WPT Hollywood Home Game, Jack Black likes to infuse all ventures with his trademark wit and hilarious tenacity.
