Jon Ford grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. His mother is a nursing instructor. He started playing poker with his friends at the age of 16 and later branched out to online poker. Ford played tennis in college before he decided to take time off to pursue poker. He says there is a big correlation between poker and tennis: both are individual sports in which you have to push yourself to reap the rewards. Ford honed his poker skills as an online player. He believes that today's younger internet players have an advantage over the traditional brick and mortar poker players, because they see more hands in a typical sitting. Ford says it would take traditional players years to get the kind of experience online players can get in a very short time. Ford played in a few European Poker Tour events before he finally tackled the World Poker Tour. His first WPT event was the 2007 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Ford outlasted more than 900 players to make the final table. He went out in third place, for a payout of more than $550,000. Ford says he plans to stay on course with his poker career, but he would also like to finish his education, because it would make his mom happy.
