Michael Omelchuk, of Bellport, N.Y. started playing poker in his parent's basement at the ripe age of 11. He's gotten out of the basement, but he's still taking money from his friends in their $20 cash games. Omelchuk says that he's learned a lot playing seven card stud and five card draw with the same ten or so guys over the last decade and that many of them are as good at poker as he is. He's hoping that his tournament success will interest them in playing bigger events and that eventually they can have a crew of their own taking a tournament by storm. Omelchuk credits the movie Rounders with teaching him about Texas Hold'em and that seeing the World Poker Tour on television as galvanized him into becoming a serious poker player. And serious he is. Michael put himself through college playing poker and spent some time working as a mortgage broker. Omelchuk's not sure he'll continue playing poker professionally, indicating that twelve hour days of constant play is too much of a grind. He's considered becoming a stock broker or a money manager much to his family's delight. They want to know when he's going to get a job. But the way this young gun has been playing, he's definitely got some time before he needs to make that decision. Michael says that he is a private person and that for the most part, he'd rather be found on the sidelines, and is hoping that his poker game won't be affected by the cameras and action that surround the final table limelight. However he was thrilled to find himself sitting next to big named players like Hoyt Corkins and Kathy Liebert who he's watched play on television. The way he performed in Season 5 of the World Poker Tour, we may be seeing a lot more of him right next to the other poker luminaries.
