Mike White isn’t a household name, nor is he known in most poker circles. The 44-year old business man is a low-key man who cherishes family and work. The business degree holder from Fairfield University worked diligently through the years and built his own commercial construction business, an accomplishment in which he takes great pride. He provides for his wife and 9-year old daughter, and his top priorities don’t include poker.
With that said, poker is a game that White has enjoyed for years, and he regularly plays in a home game with friends. As experience grew among the group, there were occasions that they would play a home satellite with a $1200 buy-in to award the winner enough money to play in WPT events. White also found his way to numerous tournaments through the years – when family and work allowed – but it would be the 2007 World Poker Finals that would propel him into the poker books.
White went to the WPT event in late 2007 in the hopes of making his poker home game friends proud and possibly making some extra money for his family. During the tournament, though, he continued to work each day before making the trek to Foxwoods to play. Somehow, he balanced the running of a business with playing in a prestigious tournament, and he made it through a stellar field of 575 players to wind up at the World Poker Finals final table. Though he finished in fifth place, he left $243,184 richer and with an accomplishment that few can claim. Whether he can add another grand finish to his poker resume is probably still not on the list of priorities for White, but he surely can’t be counted out.
