In his youth, Patrick Hocking began playing kitchen-table poker with pennies, nickels, and dimes alongside friends and family. As he grew up, attended school, and went on to become a hospital administrator, poker remained a favorite hobby. In his free time, he wanted to play on a semi-competitive level but there were no casinos near his small Oregon town. He ended up finding a local game in one of the town's taverns. It wasn't the idea place because Patrick didn't drink, but it served its purpose. When poker became immensely popular and the boom took place, Patrick took up poker online and played regularly for about five years. His wife was quite happy that he was no longer frequenting a tavern, as was he. He honed his skills in his leisure time and found a reasonable amount of success on the Internet. Finally, he decided it was time to test those skills in a major tournament. That's where the World Poker Tour came in. In 2005, Patrick decided that the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure was the perfect opportunity for a vacation and a shot at a WPT event. He not only sailed through the field of poker pros and experienced players, but he ended up at the final table. Eventually, he cashed in fourth place for $207,700 " a nice payday for a casual poker player. He has not since cashed in any major tournaments and has no desire to play full-time. He loves his job at the hospital as he feels he contributes something to society, but poker will always be a hobby and lifelong pastime.
