Raj Kattamuri was born and raised in Vizag, India and learned from an early age how to be a solid, focused, and respectful competitor. His father taught him to play chess when he was only six years old, and the game of bridge was introduced to him when he was eight. He admitted that he has always been drawn to card games, which would remain a sincere hobby throughout his youth. At the age of 19, he came to the United States to pursue an education which eventually led him to a career as an electrical engineer. During his first years in the United States, Raj played as often as possible, but it wasn't until he moved to Dallas for work that he found some like-minded friends who showed him the way to the casinos in nearby Shreveport, Louisiana. Though he had yet to find his stride in live cash games, it was in Shreveport that something clicked for him as he played 30-40 hour sessions of cards. It was in 2004 when he traveled to Tunica for the Jack Binion World Poker Open that everything fell into place. He won the $2,000 limit hold'em tournament for over $127,000. Two months later, he won the $1,000 Winnin' o' the Green event in Los Angeles for his second consecutive win. Raj's dedication to the game has paid off. In 2005, he attended the Jack Binion World Poker Open again, and when the World Poker Tour's main event came up, he was intent upon playing it. Though he made it to the final table, he was eliminated in sixth place but cashed for more than $240,000. He has since cashed in another WPT event as well as a World Series of Poker tournament, and his record boasts of numerous other cashes and a 2005 win. He hasn't decided to quit his day job yet, but the lucrative poker experiences have certainly given him that option should he decide to take it.
