The phrase "beginners luck" doesn't carry with it a great connotation. It makes it sound like the player is getting by more on good fortune than skill. Use the phrase if you like, but don't worry about angering Randy Burger. He'll be just fine. After all, it takes more than beginners luck to make it to the final table of a World Poker Tour event. Burger is a finance manager for Motorola who spends most of his time playing golf and any other sports he can find. Still looking for any competitive outlet, Burger found his way into poker. He read three or four books and played a little bit online. The next thing he knew, he was playing in a World Poker Tour event in Atlantic City at the Borgata. The next thing? Indeed, he was sitting at the final table. Burger was one of six players to make the final televised WPT table at the Borgata Poker Open in Season 2 of the World Poker Tour. Although he had said he would be happy with nothing less than first place, Burger ended up finishing in sixth. Still, he won more than $40,000 for his efforts. By any standard, not bad for six months work.
