Before 2002, Robert Varkonyi spent more time working on banking than his bankroll. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he worked as an investment banker in his native New York. Still, while investment banking was a good way to play the bills, Varkonyi had a serious interest in poker, a holdover from his days playing cards at MIT. In 2002, Varkonyi traveled to the World Series of Poker. He was not a familiar face in the crowd. It was the final year before the poker revolution. Most of the people in the field knew the favorites and Varkonyi was decidedly not one of them. His anonymity even prompted the brash Phil Hellmuth to promise to shave his head if Varkonyi managed to win. Before long, the poker world would see a bald Hellmuth and an investment banker named Robert Varkonyi who was $2 million richer. Varkonyi continues to play poker, as well as write and do television commentary on the game he loves. He also tutors and supports his wife Olga in her efforts to win the World Series of Poker.
