Hailing from Perth near Ottawa, Ontario in Canada, Scott Montgomery still calls the small town home. As a young man, he went to school, then on to the University of Waterloo for his education where he specialized in computers and math. But after college, he struggled with a direction for his life. He held many jobs like karate instructor, even moving to Japan for a few years to teach English, but never found exactly what he sought.

Four years ago, he discovered poker. While his parents supported whatever it was Scott chose to do, it was the competition and the financial benefits that drew him in. He typically played cash games – limit and no-limit – and even moved to Las Vegas and Connecticut for short periods of time to enjoy the benefits of living in places where poker thrived. After moving back to Canada, he began to play more online poker which is where he first experimented with online tournaments and satellites.

Enter the World Poker Tour. He won a satellite tournament online with a prize package to make the trip to the L.A. Poker Classic in Los Angeles in February of 2008. He considered the trip more of a vacation, though he took the tournament seriously and was glad that he did. By putting four years of poker skills into play, he navigated through the tough field and found himself at the final table of one of the WPT’s most popular events. Ultimately, Scott had to settle for a fifth place finish but the prize money was close to $300,000 – enough to pad a bankroll quite nicely and allow this budding professional poker player to play on a bigger scale and play more tournaments.
