Jack Liu was born in Shanghai, China and moved to the United States with some of his family when he was 11-years old. Though he remains close with those relatives still in China and hopes to visit them in the near future, he currently makes his home in San Diego, California. Since having recently graduated from the University of California – San Diego with a management science degree, he has spent most of his time in the poker world and making decisions about his future.
Liu began playing poker around the age of 17 and began honing his game in the dorm rooms at UCSD with friends. They played Texas hold’em at low stakes - $.05/$.10 and up – and worked their way up to low stakes tournaments but staying within a college student’s budget. Between learning to love the game of poker through home games with friends and possibly being influenced by the casinos during visits to his parents, both of whom live in Las Vegas, he began to set his sights on higher buy-in tournaments. And by watching the World Poker Tour on television, he gained some knowledge and felt he could compete at a higher level.
In August of 2007, Liu decided to take a chance on some smaller buy-in events at the Bicycle Casino and cashed in a $1000 no-limit hold’em event after satellite-ing his way in through a $100 qualifier. He parlayed his $1235 in prize money into a satellite tournament win to gain entry into the $10,000 WPT Legends of Poker main event. Only days later, he found himself at the final table, and though he was disappointed with his sixth place cash, he walked away with $137,175. His intentions are to play more tournaments, but more importantly, he wants to pay off his parent’s house and invest in some property of his own. The poker circuit has probably not seen the last of this young player.
