Steve Stolzmann has been a firefighter in Sheboygan, Wisconsin for more than 20 years. His son, WPT champion John Stolzmann, taught him to play poker a few years ago, and they've been chasing their poker dreams ever since. Like his son, Steve Stolzmann has honed his poker skills on the internet. He can't play poker while he's at work at the firehouse, but during his downtime on the job, he reads up on the game. Steve Stolzmann and his son often travel to Minnesota together to play poker in casinos there. Steve admits he's never beaten his son, but he's certainly helped his son's poker career. Steve has won his own buy-ins to several big tournaments and even staked his son in several of them. Steve has cashed twice at big live tournaments, but he's never made a final table. However, that doesn't mean Steve hasn't made any money through the game of poker. Steve talked his son, John, into going with him to the 6th Jack Binion World Poker Open in Tunica, Mississippi in January 2005. Steve backed John in this World Poker Tour event, and the younger Stolzmann ended up winning the whole thing. Since Steve had 45 percent of his son in this tournament, he came out a winner as well. Forty-five percent of $1.4 million isn't too bad. Steve isn't going to sit back and let his son have all the poker glory, though. You just might see him at the next big tournament, fighting through the pack, trying to get his first big win.
