Steve Wong's parents were natives of Hong Kong but found their way to the Netherlands before Steve was born. His early life in an Amsterdam suburb was not one that predicted a life in professional poker. In fact, by the time he was old enough to gamble, Wong had found a passion for games far away from the poker table. He fell in love with baccarat and blackjack. He might have stayed there and tried to fight the house edge had it not been for the intervention of his cousin, professional poker player Steven "Lucky" Lui. At the time, Lui had already won two big events in Europe. In 2003, he took Wong under us wing and taught him to play. Since then, Wong has morphed from a "EV gambler into a dangerous pro poker player. While he dabbles in games like snooker, he's spent most of his time since then playing on the professional poker circuit. His jump to the pro poker and Lui's tutelage served him well. The second half of the year 2006 turned into a six-month coming out party for Steve Wong. After placing fourth in a no-limit hold'em event at the 2006 World Series of Poker for more than 150,000, Wong went on to crush the year-end tournaments. In the span of three months, he had three first place finishes and one second place finish in major events, including a World Poker Tour final table finish. Those big wins propelled his career earnings over the $1 million mark and solidified Steve Wong's place among the best in the game. Wong, known in some circles as "S18" continues to play in all the top tournaments and give credit to his cousin for getting him started on the path to poker stardom.
