If L.A. is your hometown, there will probably be some occasion in your life for you to have run-ins with people in both the film and poker industries. Steven Shkolnik happens to like both of those worlds quite a bit. If you're dabbling in the behind-the-scenes world of the film industry or playing a poker tournament out west, you're going to run into the guy they call the River Rat. Shkolnik picked up his nickname after working on a film of the same name early in his career. Once he started playing poker and his friends realized how often it took Shkolnik to the river to make his hand, the name stuck. Soon, Shkolnik found himself enjoying playing poker more than he enjoyed working in the movies and started putting his money into the poker world. Shkolnik is not the type of guy who has gained worldwide fame with his poker play, but that hasn't kept him from earning a lot of money. In 2003, Shkolnik found his stride in the L.A. Poker Classic. He made it all the way to the final table of that WPT Season 1 event, placing fifth and earning more than $50,000. Since then, Shkolnik has made the final table of a World Series of Poker limit hold'em event and put together several more big cashes.
