In the poker world, if you tell someone that your last name is Harrington, that your mother is from Boston, and that you have made a final table of a major event, most folks might guess your first name is Dan. For one player though, that's as far as it goes. He doesn't wear a bright green Red Sox cap, he's never made the final table of the World Series, and he doesn't have any author credits to his name. His first name is Ted, his last name is Harrington, and he plays poker. In short, there's no relation to Dan. Ted Harrington was born in Ireland and moved to America as a child, son to a general contractor and a nurse. He grew up and picked up poker fairly early in life, but never made a career of it. Instead, he followed his father's lead and went into the contracting business, planning, building, and selling spec homes. Still, he played some poker on the side and eventually found his way online. There he won a cheap satellite to a World Poker Tour event. The next thing he knew, he was in Aruba and competing for life-changing money. Harrington, a lover of U2 and the occasional piece of veal, made his mark on the poker world when he took fifth place in Season 2 of the World Poker Tour's Ultimate Poker Classic in Aruba. He won more than $60,000. It didn't launch a career for him, but gave him a great story to tell to the people who still buy his homes back in Rhode Island.
