Tommy Grimes is the definition of the southern gambler. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Grimes grew up in the heart of the Deep South and went to Delta State University on a basketball scholarship. After graduation, he went into the Army and played basketball for his country, traveling around the world and shooting hoops against Olympic teams. Finally, he made his way back to the United States, living all over the South. When he finally settled in Houston, the gambling man would settle in with some of the people who have made poker what it is today. Grimes started playing poker and became friends with the forefathers of Texas Hold'em. When he was 22 years old, he once got a call from Benny Binion himself. Binion told him to gather up all the poker players he knew for a poker tournament. From that moment forward, poker and Grimes' place in it began to grow. Since then, he's become known as one of the veterans of the game and is respected just about everywhere he goes. Over his many decades in the game, Grimes has amassed hundreds of thousands of dollars in poker tournament winnings. One of his greatest achievements in tournament poker was making the final table of the Jack Binion World Poker Open in Season 1 of the World Poker Tour. His sixth place finish earned him more than $50,000. While that is just a fraction of Grimes' lifetime winnings, it marks the one time he has appeared on the World Poker Tour main stage.
