Borgata Poker Open

Borgata Poker Open

The Borgata Poker Open is a player favorite, as 560 of them came to play and set a new attendance record!

At the final table, tournament pros and high-stakes cash game players make up most of the six, with an amateur completing the group. Mike Matusow, Eugene Todd, and Haralabos Voulgaris are no strangers to the tournament scene, but Mark Weitzman is a highly successful cash game player. Scott Yoon is the newbie with a lot of chips, but Dr. Roy Winston is the chip leader. It’s anyone’s game...

The Borgata Poker Open is always one of the most popular stops on the World Poker Tour, but this time, the 560 players who signed up to play set a new record. And when the smoke cleared from the massive field, there was a diverse group of six left to play for the more than $1.5 million first prize.

The players were seated as follows, with starting chip counts:

Seat 1: Heung “Scott” Yoon 3,090,000

Seat 2: Roy Winston 5,355,000

Seat 3: Haralabos Voulgaris 1,465,000

Seat 4: Mark Weitzman 1,750,000

Seat 5: Mike Matusow 2,965,000

Seat 6: Eugene Todd 2,190,000

The cards went in the air with a 5,000 ante and blinds at 40,000 and 80,000. There was an intensity among the players, a heavy focus on taking a WPT title and taking the sizable first prize to boot. Matusow was quiet, Todd was calm, and the game was on.

Mike Matusow took the opportunity to raise the first hand to 200,000 with QsJh and got no callers. Several hands later, he raised to 225,000 with AsKd, and again, he walked alone.

Eugene Todd had a frustrating start as well. In a hand that was raised by Haralabos Voulgaris to 200,000 with Qs10s, Todd called with 4c4s. Both checked the flop of Js9c6c, but when an Ac came on the turn, Voulgaris bet out 230,000, and Todd folded what he didn’t know was the best hand.

Two hands later, Todd raised to 240,000 with AdKd, and Voulgaris reraised to 615,000 with AhAc. Todd reraised All-In, and Voulgaris called. The board came 10c7s4h3h9d, and when the chips were counted down, Todd had Voulgaris barely covered. Voulgaris doubled up on the hand, and Todd sat with only 25,000.

Todd was All-In on the next hand after Voulgaris, Mark Weitzman, and Mike Matusow all called. Luckily, Todd had 8d8h. The flop came Jc8c3h, and Weitzman called on a flush draw with 6c5c. Matusow and Voulgaris folded. The turn brought a 3c, which gave Weitzman the flush but Todd the full house – eights full of threes. The river was inconsequential, and Todd quadrupled up. Still short, Todd moved All-In for 105,000 on the next hand with KhJs, and Scott Yoon called with Qh5s. The cards were dealt AcJc10c7c5h, and Todd’s pair of Jacks allowed him to double again.

Again, it was Todd vying for his tournament life. Matusow limped initially with Qd9d, but Todd raised to 225,000 with As8h, though he meant to move All-In but forgot the chip that capped his cards. Matusow did the courtesy of raising to 230,000, and Todd called to be officially All-In. The board produced Ac6s3c6cKh. His pair of Aces was good, and Todd doubled again.

Weitzman got in on the doubling up action when he was put All-In by Voulgaris. Voulgaris pushed with Js9c, and Weitzman took the bait for his last 990,000 with Ac3c. The cards came 10h10s7h6s4h, and Weitzman doubled with his Ace high.

The ever-patient and surprisingly quiet Matusow got involved when Roy Winston raised to 230,000 with Ad7d. Matusow called with AsQs. After the flop of AhQd4d, Winston checked his flush draw and top pair, but Matusow bet 325,000 with top two pair. Winston raised to 1,225,000, Matusow reraised All-In for 1,940,000, and Winston called. The turn and river were 2d and Kd to give Winston the flush and the pot. Matusow was out in sixth place for $271,600 and simply devastated. He left the set quickly to gain his composure and came back later to shake hands with the remaining players.

The very next hand was still-short Todd move All-In for his 470,000. Yoon called with AsKh, and Todd showed 3d3h. The board wouldn’t be so kind to Todd this time with Jc9h7c2hKd, and Todd was eliminated in fifth place with $325,920.

With blinds up to 50,000 and 100,000 with a 10,000 ante, it was Weitzman who again tried to gain momentum. He moved All-In with AsKc, but Voulgaris couldn’t call with 9c5h. Weitzman tried it again, this time after Winston raised to 300,000. Weitzman reraised All-In with Ad8d for 1,890,000, and Winston called with AhQh. The board of KdJd6h7h5h didn’t help, and Weitzman was out in fourth place with $380,240 to take back to his cash games.

As three-handed action began, Winston sat with over 10 million in chips, while Yoon maintained with nearly 4 million and Voulgaris hung on with a little over 2.5 million.

Voulgaris tried to make something happen with Winston started the next hand by raising to 300,000 with Ks10d. Voulgaris reraised All-In for 2,640,000 with KdQs, but Winston folded. Voulgaris tried again with Qs9s by simply raising to 250,000 pre-flop, but Winston with Ah4d reraised to 750,000. Voulgaris came over the top All-In for 2,960,000, and Winston called. The dealer rolled out Jc7s3h4c4h, and Voulgaris was gone in third place with $434,560.

The chip counts of the final two players were:

Roy Winston 13,455,000

Scott Yoon 3,360,000

Heads-up play brought out a side of Yoon that hadn’t been seen at this final table – an aggressive player. He took the first pot of two-handed action by assuming that Winston was betting with nothing, and he was correct.

Next, Yoon limped with Qd2d, and Winston raised 300,000 more with Ac10c. Yoon came back with a reraise to make it 760,000, and Winston called. Winston checked in the dark before the flop of Ah4c2h was produced, and Yoon checked. The turn was a 7s, and Winston checked his top pair, Yoon bet 400,000, and Winston simply called. The river brought a Qc to give Yoon two pair, and after Winston checked in the dark, Yoon bet 500,000, and Winston called to see that he was beat. The $3,360,000 pot went to Yoon.

Blinds went up to 100,000 and 200,000 with a 20,000 ante, just in time for Yoon and Winston to get all of Yoon’s chips in the pot. Winston began by limping with Ad7h, Yoon raised to 700,000 with AcKc, and Winston reraised All-In. Yoon called for all of his 5,725,000. The board came JhJd10d10h2h, and the two were forced to split the pot.

The next hand saw Winston limping with 4h4s. Yoon raised it up to 900,000 with AsKh, and Winston called. The flop produced Qd6h4d, and Winston bet with his set of fours. Yoon check-raised to 3 million on a bluff, and Winston came back with an All-In move, and Yoon called. The turn was a 2d, which left Yoon drawing dead. The 7c on the river was meaningless.

Heung “Scott” Yoon finished in second place for by far the largest payday in his poker career of $832,725.

Roy “The Oracle” Winston won the 2007 WPT Borgata Poker Open and took home $1,575,280 for his efforts. Congratulations, Dr. Winston!
