Andrew Barta is a Hungarian-born musician who was born as Balent Andrasch Barta but changed the name upon moving to New York City in 1980, after having spent a year of transition time in Germany. He came to America with $600 in his pocket and has adjusted to American life quite well, having started what is now a growing and successful company that makes guitar amplifiers. That company outgrew Manhattan and moved to New Jersey, so as the president and chief designer, he bought a second home in New Jersey.
Andrew actually started playing poker in high school while skipping physical education classes. He never won and thought the game was fixed but enjoyed it nonetheless. Music took over his life for a number of years, but once he saw poker on television in America, he decided it might be time to find some games. He honed his game in the private clubs and home games in New York, and though cash games have been good to his bankroll, he wanted to try his hand at tournaments.
Through 2005 and 2006, Andrew scored several tournament cashes, including a World Series of Poker cash, but his biggest accomplishment came in 2007 when he won the Borgata Summer Open $5,000 Borgata Open Championship for $513,925. Having won a major event, he decided to continue playing when work allowed. That brought him to the Foxwoods Poker Classic in April of 2008, where he finished at the final table of the World Poker Tour event in third place for more than $280,000. Though music remains his true passion, poker is not far behind – and with every major finish or win in a tournament, Andrew is inspired to play more.
