Alex Rocha Wins an Unusual Three-Way Pot

Mar 7, 2020

Alex Rocha

A player raises under the gun to 1,500, Marty Gorenc calls from middle position, James Calderaro calls from the cutoff, and Alex Rocha (pictured) asks for the amount of the raise and repeats it as a question (“Fifteen hundred?”) before putting out a reraise to 6,500.

A floorperson is called over to rule, since Rocha technically said the call amount before raising, but the floorperson rules that his action was clear and the reraise to 6,500 stands. Rocha is given a warning to be careful about repeating amounts, and the action continues.

The player in the big blind calls 6,500, the original raiser calls, and Gorenc calls. Calderaro folds, saying something about “karma.”

The flop comes Spade AClub KHeart 7, and it checks to Rocha, who bets 3,000. The big blind folds, but the under-the-gun player and Gorenc both call.

The turn card pairs the board with the Club A, and it checks to Rocha, who takes another look at his cards and jokes that he can’t win this hand. Rocha checks.

The river card is the Spade 2, and when it checks to Rocha, he eagerly checks to end the action.

The under-the gun player quickly shows Heart 10Heart 9, and Rocha smiles and says, “Ooh, I can beat that!”

Gorenc ever-so-slowly turns over his cards, revealing Spade 10Club 9 for the same hand.

Rocha triumphantly shows his Heart KHeart 6 to win the pot with two pair, aces and kings.
