Head of the Class: Former School Administrator Wins ClubWPT Trip to Choctaw

If Len Geiger can turn his ClubWPT qualifying trip to the $1 million guaranteed WPT Choctaw into a Las Vegas final table appearance, he may gain quite a few supporters who didn’t know he played poker.

After spending his career teaching and then working as a school administrator in Wyoming and Oregon, Geiger now enjoys playing cards in retirement. What are the prospects he’d get contacted by former students and colleagues cheering him on?

“I think I probably would for sure,” he says laughing. “That would be pretty cool. But it’s been a long time since I was teaching though. I stopped teaching in 1978 and went into administration.”

The 74-year-old lives in Minden, Nevada, which is located just south of Carson City. He’s been playing at ClubWPT for about 10 years, and finds it as a way to relax and a challenge.

ClubWPT is the WPT’s sweepstakes poker site, where players can pay a $24.95 monthly subscription with a chance to win a share of $100,000 in cash and prizes each month. The site offers plenty of action and even chances to win spots in major WPT tournaments.

“I enjoy it, I really do,” he says of the site. “Plus the fact that you only pay the one [monthly] fee.”

Geiger also plays some live poker in Nevada and at other online poker sites for real money, and views ClubWPT as a way to sharpen his game. In that decade of playing on the site. He plays $1,000 guarantee tournaments on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, and also plays on the weekends.

Through the years, Geiger has done pretty well at the virtual tables. That includes making at least a small profit each year, sometimes more. He even won some Monster headphones.

About a month ago, Geiger jumped in a qualifier for a shot at earning a trip to the Choctaw. The tournament featured 2,300 players and he came out on top.

“It was great,” he says. “I played for about five and a half hours.”

Married with two children and four grandchildren, Geiger and his wife enjoy camping in their free time. They especially enjoy the state of Oregon and Pismo Beach, California.

While she may not be a gambler herself, his wife has grown accustomed to his online poker playing spreading into the evenings.

“The only time she gets mad is around dinner time, and I’m still focused in on a tournament,” he says laughing. “Other than that she’s good with it.”
