Jason Mercier

Jason Mercier (pictured) enters the tournament for the first time here in Level 8, and in his first hand he raises from middle position to 1,350. Three players call.

The flop comes Spade 8Heart 7Heart 2, the big blind checks, Mercier bets 2,300, and another player in middle position raises to 7,100. The fourth player in the hand folds, and the big blind calls.

Mercier moves all in for 28,575. The middle-position player calls, and the big blind folds and says he had pocket aces with the ace of hearts.

Mercier shows Heart 9Heart 8 for a pair of eights with a heart flush draw, and he needs to improve to stay alive against his opponent’s Heart KDiamond K.

The turn card is the Heart J, giving Mercier the lead with a heart flush, but one more heart on the board will give his opponent a higher flush.

The river card is the Spade Q, and Mercier wins the pot with his flush to double up in his first hand of the tournament.
